• Maple Smoked Rice Paper Bacon (NEW!)
• Alfredo Sauce (NEW!)
• Cashew Dill Cheese
• Nutty Chocolate Ice Cream Bars
• Esther-Approved Cherry Cheesecake
• A Conversation With Steve & Derek (NEW!)
Grand Central Publishing is proud to present the New York Times Bestseller, ESTHER THE WONDER
PIG: Changing the World One Heart at a Time by Steve Jenkins and Derek Walter, with Caprice
Crane in trade paperback on May 30, 2017 — with two new Esther-Approved recipes and a Conversation
with Steve and Derek!
ESTHER THE WONDER PIG shares the heartwarming story of this titular social media superstar and
friend to all, and of how loving families really do come in all shapes and sizes. Esther has won the hearts
of people from many walks of life, amassing—with her parents’ love and support—over 1 million followers
across social media (and growing!) She is now declared a Global Influencer on Facebook in a special
partnership with the mega platform.
In the summer of 2012, Steve Jenkins was contacted by an old friend about adopting a micro piglet.
Though he knew his partner Derek wouldn’t be enthusiastic, he agreed to take the adorable little animal,
thinking he could care for her himself. Little did he know how that decision would change his and Derek’s
lives forever. It turned out that there was nothing “micro” about Esther, and Steve and Derek had actually
signed on to raise a full-sized commercial pig. Tiny Esther weighed just four pounds back then, but is now
a whopping 650 pounds. Esther quickly outgrew their small home—but not without some real growing
pains and a lot of messes. Esther voices her opinions, and boy does she have opinions!
When it became clear that Esther needed more space—and a lot of it—Steve and Derek made another
life-changing decision: they bought a farm and opened the Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary, where
they could care for Esther once she was full-grown and for other animals like her, in need of a safe haven
when there usually is none for them. The couple continues to rescue and rehabilitate abandoned and
abused farm animals there. Esther shares her life on the farm with lovable pigs, cows, birds, goats, donkeys,
horses, sheep, rabbits, and other canine and feline siblings!
Funny, heartwarming, and truly charming, ESTHER THE WONDER PIG follows Steve and Derek’s adventure
from reluctant pig parents to farm-owning advocates for animals. Esther is a true phenomenon with
an inspiring, love-filled message for the world.
Peace, Love & Esther!

In just three short years, Steve and Derek have cemented a place for themselves among the world’s
most wellknown and successful animal activists, accumulating hundreds of thousands of followers from
all over the globe. In 2014, Steve and Derek founded the Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary in Campbellville,
Ontario, where they continue to rescue and rehabilitate abandoned and abused farmed animals.
Caprice Crane is an award-winning, internationally bestselling, five-time novelist, screenwriter, and
television writer. Caprice’s humor and satirical observations have earned her a wildly loyal social media
following and the distinction as one of the Huffington Post’s “50 Funny People You Should Be Following
on Twitter.”
“First, Jenkins and Walter opened their hearts to one very special pig, and now they are opening their
doors and letting us in, too. ESTHER THE WONDER PIG is a tender, funny story that manages to sneak
up behind you when you’re least expecting it and change your life. Be prepared to fall in love—with a pig.”
—Jasmin Singer, author of Always Too Much and Never Enough: A Memoir and co-host of Our Hen House
“Told with self-effacing humor and a sense of wonder at what life can bring, ESTHER is the story of
the transformative power of love between people and animals and how the decision to try to make a difference
on a personal level can effect positive change far beyond anything that might have been imagined.”
—Larry Levin, New York Times bestselling author of Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love
“Steve and Derek show us what we already know at Mercy for Animals-that farmed animals are just as
deserving of love and respect as the dogs and cats we share our home with-or, in their case, the pig they
share their home with.”
—Nathan Runkle, founder & president, Mercy for Animals
“An inspirational, enjoyable read, especially for animal lovers.”
“Written in a sincere, touching, and often quite funny voice, ESTHER THE WONDER PIG is a balm to
the soul . . . So far, definitely my favorite read of 2016.”
—Have Cake, Will Travel
“Funny, entertaining, enlightening, and touching, this book about an unknowingly influential little piggy is
a good read that also provides an education on the intelligence of pigs and their capacity for giving and
receiving affection.”―

Above (from left) is VO New England Outreach Coordinator Lana Smithson with volunteers Alex Bonfiglio, Sharon MacNair, and Margaret Arzon.

Steady rain and snow all day at the University of Vermont didn’t stop a great group of volunteers from giving a voice to animals. Alex Bonfiglio is starting a veg group on campus and today she heard from a bunch of students interested in joining. Margaret Arzon is a grad student who helped for the second time (first time was last semester). Sharon MacNair has been active for years with a group called Green Mountain Animal Defenders. Olivia Marelic [below, right] and Emma Schoeppner [below, left] came by between their classes to give leafleting a try.

Sharon told me her group has had volunteers in the past who mentioned they went veg after getting a leaflet on campus. Alex heard from someone who said he still has his leaflet from years ago and it’s helped him be vegan ever since.

I’m so thankful for these volunteers making it a really great day!

Today I met DyJahashon [below], who is studying theater at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. After I gave him a Compassionate Athlete leaflet, he came back to tell me he’s going to start eating vegan. The leaflet from Vegan Outreach was the final push after he had seen a lot of people on Instagram who looked healthier by going vegan.

Holiday Pet Safety Tips
With the holiday seasons upon us it's important to keep your four legged loved ones safe! Here are a few tips to keep you and yours happy and safe this holiday season!
  1. Be mindful of cold weather products such as de-icing products, salt, and anti-freeze! When walking your pet outside during the snow and ice be sure to wipe their paws and undersides thoroughly when returning inside. This will ensure your pet is safe from any skin irritations or more serious conditions.
  2. Keep all holiday decorations out of reach such as tinsel and ribbon. Ingestion of these materials could cause serious health complications for your pet.
  3. There are lots of beautiful holiday plants out there but many of them are dangerous to your pets if ingested. Keep lilies, mistletoe, ivy, holly, and poinsettias out of reach!
  4. We all love our fur friends very much and want them to enjoy some of the same yummy treats we do but keep in mind that turkey bones can be very dangerous to our pets and could cause obstructions. Holiday sweets such as chocolate are dangerous too! Keep the yummies out of reach of your furry friends.
  5. With the holidays come lots of visitors and/or out of town trips. It's important to ensure your pet is properly tagged and micro-chipped in the event they become spooked during this holiday season.

Report on BVSTX Meatout and Penn State Events

VO’s Motivational Speaker & Diversity Specialist, David Carter, flew to Texas last weekend to speak at a Meatout festival presented by the Black Vegetarian Society of Texas. The room was packed!

David Carter with audience at BVSTX Meatout 2016 event

David reports:

Being the keynote speaker at the Black Vegetarian Society of Texas event was such a powerful experience. Having the opportunity for the first time to talk to a predominately diverse audience was incredibly uplifting. Being able to reach that demographic means reaching a group that hasn’t been heavily exposed to veganism. Which is why I’m so excited about my upcoming college speaking tour and diversity projects!

After his speaking event at Penn State last week, David was featured in an article on FOXSports.com, as well as in this article from the Daily Collegian:

Former NFL player David Carter, also known as “The 300 Pound Vegan,” came to Penn State on Monday night to share the story of his transition from a meat-eater to a vegan.…

Lynn Jiao (senior – supply chain management) said hearing Carter’s success with adopting a vegan diet removed any skepticism she previously had about veganism.…

Health Promoting Meals From

the TrueNorth Kitchen

By Ramses Bravo with Dr. Alan Goldhamer

Foreword by T. Colin Campbell, PhD, Coauthor of The China Study

“I highly recommend this book and its recipes—they can save your life.”

T.Colin Campbell, from his introduction

The human passion for high-calorie, carbohydrate rich, salty, fatty foods is not driven by a lack of will power; it’s programmed into our genes. In the ancient past, people who ate high-calorie foods and sought out scarce salt and fats increased their chance for survival. However, in these modern times of plenty, that survival strategy no longer helps us: today it works against us, undermining our health and shortening our lives. Sugar, oil, and salt are the enemies of weight loss and overall health, and eliminating them is transformative.

In BRAVO! (Book Publishing Company; April 2012; 9781570672699), chef Ramses Bravo shows home cooks how to put life-changing habits into practice with his collection of delicious, vegan, SOS-Free recipes (no sugar, oil or salt), that will satisfy your passion for flavor and the need for essential nutrients. These nearly 100 recipes were developed by Ramses, whose background includes the Kenwood Inn and Spa in Sonoma, for the TrueNorth Health Center in Santa Rosa, California, which has helped over 8,000 people heal from hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and other chronic illnesses.

Inside you’ll find:
