A New Kind Of Pet-ty Politics

(New York, NY) Every President since President Chester Arthur has had at least one pet in the White House according to the Presidential Pet Museum, and the majority of ‘First Pets’ are dogs. Keryn Rod of Purebred Breeders LLC, says, “When it comes to presidential pet-ty politics, it’s not what the politician says about how much he loves his dog that matters most, but how that dog is a reflection of the man who owns it.”

Rod says, "Men adopt different breeds of dogs for different reasons, however, there are many experts who say the type of dog a man chooses to own says a lot about his character and values." For example, according to Wendy Diamond, author of “What a Lucky Dog”, men who own a German Shepherd are men with classic lifestyles and values whose wild side will mellow with age. Intrigue and mystery are said to get the attention of a man with a German Shepherd.  Rick Santorum, Republican presidential candidate owns a German Shepherd, as did President Herbert Hoover.

The owner of an Irish Setter is said to be very sociable, good-natured, and tends to be a loyal, and affectionate family man. An outgoing, healthy, action oriented outdoorsman tends to choose this dog. Mitt Romney, who continues to be dogged by his 1980s 12-hour car ride to Canada with his Irish Setter in a kennel tied to the roof of his car, said among other defenses, that his dog liked the fresh air. President Richard Nixon also had an Irish Setter.

Newt Gingrich does not appear to own any pets though he has said that when he was a child he had a Doberman Pinscher. Wendy Diamond says if you are looking for marriage material in a man, you should consider the Doberman Pinscher owner. So far, three women have agreed with her when it came to Newt.

Ron Paul’s foray into pet-ty politics came earlier in the campaign when he portrayed himself as a Rottweiler and his opponents as Shih Tzus in a campaign ad accusing the other candidates of being all bark and no bite when it came to cutting government spending.

Rod, of Purebred Breeders LLC says, “It’s a shame that dogs have to be dragged into politics, but with presidential candidates, if you can do your research on the breed, chances are you’ll pick the one that’s right for you.”

Maybe Presidents Hayes and Taft had it right when it came to White House pets. Hayes had the first Siamese kitten in America and Taft was the last to have a cow.

QUAKER PET GROUP LAUNCHES SILVER TAILS™ SENIOR PET PRODUCTS

Innovative Solutions Serving Over 80 Million Senior Pets

NEW YORK, NY – (September 9, 2011) If you know anyone with a pet, you understand that pets are part of the family.  But did you know that approximately 50% of the U.S. pet population (over 80 million dogs and cats) is over age 7? With increased access to superior healthcare, pets are living much longer and deserve special products created for their evolving needs.

After extensive research and understanding the challenges pet-parents face with their aging pets and the needs of pets themselves, Quaker Pet Group (QPG) created an extensive health and wellness line just for seniors to help make them happy, healthy, and comfortable in their older years: SILVER TAILS™ Senior Pet Products.

To-date, an entire product collection of health and wellness solutions for the underserved and ever-growing senior pet population has been non-existent.  QPG is launching its Silver Tails collection with the following senior product innovations: a hand-held massager (standard and infrared), a specially-formulated dental care system, bamboo-charcoal pet bed covers and mats, magnetic therapy collars, Bottoms-Up™ support harnesses, age-appropriate chew toys, flavor enhancing supplement powder, and soft-chew treats.

“A silver tail deserves to keep wagging.  As pet-parents ourselves, we saw first-hand the changes our four-legged friends go through later in life, and saw an opportunity to not only fill a needed market gap but also make a real difference in pets’ lives,” states Quaker Pet Group’s President and Chief Operating Officer Neil Werde.  “Easing the stress associated with the care of older pets, we know Silver Tails products will make a huge impact towards improving the lives of pets and pet-parents.  Our retail partners like PETCO® understand the needs of senior pets, and we are thrilled they are bringing the entire line of product innovations to market to improve the lives of this fast-growing and underserved segment of aging pets.”

Talkin Pets NEWS
Saturday, Feb. 25, the 56th day of 2012.
There are 310 days left in the year.

“Stand up straight, dear.” “Don’t mumble.” “No one finds that frown attractive.” “Be a lady and stick to your principles.”

My mother’s words still ring in my ears. Through my childhood, teens, and college years, her advice and her role model of grace, kindness, and quiet strength were instrumental in preparing me for an effective and successful life.   I had no idea, however, that her advice was also preparing me to be a dog trainer!

The animals on our farm were also my teachers.  In their own way, they taught me the true nature of power and influence.  The Queen of the Herd, the Lead Horse, and the Top Dog all got there without serious fighting or confrontation.  Instead they used body language, boundaries, focus, and quiet determination to achieve and hold their positions of power.  Had my mother been talking to them, too?

When I started my dog training business over twenty years ago, I did house calls. It was usually women who sought out my help because they were being overwhelmed by the family dog.  They were either mad and yelling, or being overly permissive and smothering which made them ineffectual and the dogs ran their lives.  Because these were house calls, I also got to observe their kids. Invariably, the women that could not control their dogs, could not control their kids.

Something started to click in my brain.  The very skills these women needed to control their dogs were the SAME ones they needed to control their kids… and probably other parts of their lives as well.

  • Don’t yell; stay calm
  • Set the boundaries and then enforce them
  • Be a leader, not a friend, a follower or a doormat
  • Power is achieved through control, not confrontation  (fights and confrontation in the animal world are the exception, not the rule)
  • Leadership is about being effective, not being loud (the dog doing the barking and the woman doing the yelling are not powerful or effective; the leaders are the quiet ones that simply get the job done)
  • If you don’t set your boundaries, no one respects you – not your peers, or your dog.

Because the vast majority of the dog-owning families leave dog responsibilities to us women, literally thousands of you have come to me over the years – feeling powerless, frustrated and defeated.  You assume that dog training requires either masculine strength and bravado (which you do not possess) or endless cookies and treats (which you are reluctant to use or have not solved your issues).  You are desperate for help.

I am passionate about helping women and saving dogs. If you have a dog that seems beyond control, don’t give up!  Read this book.  Your dog is not impossible; he’s just confused because you are not communicating in his language.  He ignores your frustration and yelling because he sees it as weakness, not strength.  Learn the secrets of calm, effective power and leadership in this book and you will be amazed at the turnaround in your dog.  Try it on your kids, your husbands and your co-workers while you’re at it!   What makes LIPSTICK AND THE LEASH special is that it points out the profound parallels between canine behavior and that of human beings.  We are all connected! The nature of power, how it is achieved quietly, and how clever leadership uses that power to influence (not force) the behavior of others is the real message of LIPSTICK AND THE LEASH. Dog training becomes a metaphor for life!

By focusing on a woman’s special challenges in dog training, and revealing her hidden strengths, LIPSTICK AND THE LEASH can help you discover your Inner Leader, train a dog that will make you and your family proud and, ultimately, give you a road map for getting more of what you want in life.

Enjoy.

David Frei is well-known to millions of television viewers as the longtime co-host of USA Network's annual telecast of the popular Westminster Kennel Club dog show.

Since 1990, David has co-hosted the Westminster coverage from New York's Madison Square Garden, a live telecast seen by millions of viewers every year. In connection with that role, he has made many appearances on The Today Show (NBC), Good Morning America (ABC), The Early Show (CBS), Charlie Rose (PBS), National Public Radio, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, CNN and more. David also co-hosts the NBC television coverage of The National Dog Show every Thanksgiving Day.

A longtime breeder-owner-handler and judge in the world of purebred dogs, he has enjoyed much success with his Afghan Hounds and Brittanys. The most famous was Ch. Stormhill's Who's Zoomin Who, the #1 Afghan in 1989 who retired as the top-winning female in the history of the breed. He has exhibited his Brittanys in conformation and field trials, but is proudest of the fact that his Brittanys, Teigh and Belle, are registered therapy dogs that visit people in hospitals, nursing homes and hospice every week..

David is the co-author, with Mike Lingenfelter, of "The Angel By My Side," a critically-acclaimed best seller about a heroic service dog, published in October 2002. He is a trustee for Take The Lead, a national non-profit foundation providing support for members of the dog show family suffering from terminal disease or life-threatening illness. He is a charter member of Morris & Essex Kennel Club, serves on the board of the Dog Writers Association of America.

A past president of the Afghan Hound Club of America, he chaired the widely acclaimed Afghan Hound World Congress in San Diego in 1995, which hosted more than 500 fanciers from 23 countries. Licensed by the American Kennel Club to judge Afghan Hounds, he has officiated at shows throughout the U.S., Europe, Australia and Canada.

David is co-chair for the annual Transfiguration School and Church Benefit Dinner in New York's Chinatown. He is also scheduled to appear in a role in the HBO hit series, Sex And The City in 2004. He will play a dog show judge in one of the final eight shows of the series.

Previously, David has held public relations positions with the Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers and ABC-TV Sports in New York. His wife, Cherilyn, is a chaplain resident at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, and they live in New York City with their two Brittanys.

Charlotte Reed is a popular pet expert that routinely brightens up television screens, graces radio waves, appears on best selling authors' lists and can be found lecturing at sold-out seminars.

As the fore-most expert on everything pet related, Reed counts her unique entrance into the pet industry as a source for her excitement, knowledge and dedication. Feeling a bit under the weather one afternoon, Reed decided to cut her day short working as a securities attorney at a Wall Street firm. Upon returning to her apartment, Reed was surprised to find her friendly, male dog walker…wearing an expensive gown and voguing (highly stylized modern dance characterized by photo model-like poses integrated with angular, linear and rigid arm, leg, and body movement) in a full-length mirror as her dogs watched the dance performance for the loft above. It was right then that Reed decided that the care of her Katie and Kidder, two American Cocker Spaniels, was only to be trusted to a genuine pet professional, not a male, Madonna wannabe. After not being able to find one, Reed left her job on Wall Street and founded the ultimate pet care firm, Two Dogs & A Goat Incorporated.

Reed’s story did not end there but has been chronicled in pages of New York Magazine, Smart Money and others. Her story has grown to become an New York City legend. A few years ago, Reed was attending a lavish party at the Gramercy Park Hotel when a well-known agent launched into a crowd pleasing story. Unbeknownst to him it was about Reed’s run-in with the dancing dog walker. Reed promptly offered up a few corrections of the story, shocking both the agent and his entertained audience. When asked how she knew the details, she responded that she was the story’s canine champion. Hence, the laughter never stopped; but, neither has Reed’s pet-friendly career nor has she failed to hear her story told again and again.

From the day of the incident, Reed has advised, suggested and advocated on behalf of pets and their people. Whether it was an famous songstress wanting her Maltipoo styled for a woman’s magazine photo shoot; an owner of a lost pet seeking advice how to find his dog; an award-winning pianist needing expert training tips for his three Labradors; a favorite, court house waitress desiring a solution her cat’s constant scratching; or even, a global pr firm requiring help understanding pet consumer behavior, Reed continues to provide the solution-oriented and cost-effective answers to lead happier and healthier pet lifestyles.

DOGNY: America's Tribute to Search and Rescue Dogs

People around the world were touched by the loyalty and resolve of the Search and Rescue Dogs who worked tirelessly to recover victims of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. In the aftermath of the attacks, the American Kennel Club coordinated efforts to assist the SAR handlers and dogs at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

In a continuing commemoration of the heroism of those SAR teams, the AKC established The American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery Corporation Canine Support and Relief Fund, a charitable fund to support professional and volunteer canine search and rescue organizations throughout the United States. The fund was launched with DOGNY, America's Tribute to Search and Rescue Dogs, a hugely successful public art initiative. We encourage you to explore these pages to learn more about DOGNY and the dogs and handlers it honors.

January 15, 2010

Dear Dog Lover,

We are pleased to inform you of a decision made by the AKC Board at the January 11, 2010 meeting, which will enhance the AKC Canine Partners program. This exciting new program allows mixed breed dog owners to list their dogs and participate in AKC Agility, Obedience and Rally events starting April 1, 2010.

While each club’s participation in the AKC Canine Partners program will remain voluntary, clubs may now choose to allow mixed breed participation at any AKC Agility, Obedience or Rally event. Mixed breeds will compete in the same classes and earn the same titles as their purebred counterparts.

This decision was made following a lengthy discussion and review of feedback from enrollees, delegates, clubs, show and trial chairpersons, current purebred exhibitors and potential mixed-breed exhibitors, prompting a reevaluation of the current program. AKC staff took into consideration the prior feedback received from the AKC Delegate body about the program and contacted each individual member of the AKC Delegates Committee for Obedience, Tracking and Agility and others regarding this feedback.

After taking into consideration staff recommendations; compelling feedback from dog owners, clubs and fanciers; and the long lead time for event applications, AKC decided it was best to move quickly and change the program format so a majority of clubs would have the option to take advantage of the opportunity to allow mixed breeds to compete in existing Agility, Obedience and Rally events beginning April 1, 2010.

This positive step forward for AKC and dog owners enables us to share our passion for dogs and our commitment to responsible dog ownership with an even greater audience. It will simplify the planning and management of club events, while benefiting mixed breed dog owners by giving them more opportunities to participate in events in their local areas.

Please contact AKC Canine Partners if you have any questions or comments you would like to share. Email - This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
