The Marvels

Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures present a PG-13, 105-minute, Action, Adventure, Fantasy, directed by Nia DaCosta, written by DaCosta, Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik with a theater release of November 10, 2023.

This is definitely a movie written, directed and starring the embodiment of women-power in the universe. It follows Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and some of the mistakes she made in the past years, one being that she never came back for Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) when she was a little girl and her mother was dying of cancer. Now Monica is grown with powers of her own, something Carol was unaware of until they finally meet. They basically meet because of Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) who wearing a cuff bracelet mailed to her by her grandmother has been joined with Carol and Monica due to the two women not being able to keep their hands off something they should not touch in space.

So meanwhile Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) has been searching for the cuff bracelet on a planet where she discovered it was buried but when it is retrieved it is alone and she and her warriors have no idea where the other cuff could be. Hence, it is on Kamala’s wrist who after years of being a huge fan of Captain Marvel she finally gets to meet her as do her parents and brother on earth. One problem if Dar-Benn gets the other cuff her powers may be unstoppable and she will destroy earth and any other planets in the universe she pleases.

Along the journey of the 3 women acting now as one, the audience gets to experience other planets and civilizations and one or two secrets about Carol, for instance Prince Yan (Park Seo-Joon). With some help from Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) all three women work with each other to try and save mankind from the evil Dar-Benn, let’s just say let the cat fights begin!

I was purely entertained with the special effects and the acting by all characters but I found that there could have been a bit more character development to fill us in on all the players. If you are not a pure Marvel fan and you don’t remember what last happened you can be a bit lost, so I think the writing could have been better. As for the direction it is very well done overall and thanks for adding the cat being a cat daddy myself, I loved it and its special powers while still resembling what cats do. There are several other occurrences in the story that I don’t want to give away but cuteness comes in groups later in the story. I thought one major fight scene between the four women looked a bit drab, a dark room with a few lights making it look too much like a film studio. Yet through it all I enjoyed the film but I wish they just opened it up a bit more. Stick around in the credits for a pretty interesting tease. Meow!
