Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant

STX Films, Fresco Film Services, Toff Guy Films, CAA Media Finance and WME Independent presents an R rated, 123-minute, Action, Crime, Thriller, directed by Guy Ritchie, written by Ivan Atkinson, Marn Davies and Ritchie with a theater release of April 21, 2023.

Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a military presence in Afghanistan along with his comrades on a mission to seek and destroy any weapons small or large that the Taliban is harboring throughout the lands. When a road check goes wrong one soldier is killed along with the team’s interpreter. An important person to help the American soldiers maneuver their way around enemy territories. Knowing who to trust in the territory is a task that only an interpreter would help American soldiers understand.

Back at base Kinley is looking for a new interpreter so he settles for the one he is told has a rough edge and not easy to work with, his name is Ahmed (Dar Salim). Back out in the field Ahmed has a way of using his voice and opinions beyond the authority of Kinley. That is until Kinley puts him in his place which turns out not to be such a good idea. Yet when Kinley is beaten, wounded and unable to walk, Ahmed does any means possible to get him back to his camp. When Kinley returns to his wife (Emily Beecham) and kids he finds out that Ahmed and his family, wife Basira (Fariba Sheikhan) and child were never given visas to come to America. No help from the government and concern that Ahmed and his family are on the top wanted list in Afghanistan Kinley takes it upon himself to go back and rescue the man that rescued him.

Hats off to Guy Ritchie for making this movie real and intense from start to finish. Great writing as well, I think they all made not only an important film for all to see, what life was and now again is under the rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Seeing this story really puts into perspective what our soldiers endear out there in other countries helping to keep America safe. Great acting by all especially Gyllenhaal and Salim as they create a bond no other can comprehend. Special effects throughout with lots of firearm attacks and explosions to match all make this remarkable story a must see by all movie goers. Lots of dogs in the territory used in the backdrops but not a lot of other animals!
