Dear Jon,

Today Mercy For Animals released never-before-seen footage of the commercial driftnet fishing industry—otherwise known as the death net industry. The horrifying footage, taken by Mercy For Animals, Turtle Island Restoration Network, SeaLegacy, and Sharkwater, shows vulnerable species—like dolphins, sea lions, and seabirds—killed by the driftnets and workers viciously mutilating and cutting apart live stingrays and sharks. Mercy For Animals has teamed up with these organizations to ban cruel death nets once and for all. Driftnets, so indiscriminately lethal they are called “walls of death,” are giant nets dumped into the ocean by the commercial fishing industry. The industry is notorious for the staggering number of sea animals—callously referred to as bycatch—who are caught, killed, and thrown away like garbage each time one of these death nets is pulled back onto the ship. The commercial driftnet fishing industry is responsible for egregious animal cruelty and devastating depletion of ocean habitats. Over three-quarters of marine animals killed by driftnets are bycatch, and this loss of life is a massive threat to ocean habitats. We can’t allow this horrific devastation to continue.

Please share the video with friends to help raise awareness of this issue. Please don’t support this needlessly cruel industry by eating fish. Instead, find healthy and delicious alternatives right here.Fish are every bit as capable of experiencing pain and suffering as our beloved dogs and cats, and they deserve protection from egregious cruelty. Together we are creating a more compassionate world for animals.

Matt Rice

Sincerely,
Matt Rice
President

P.S. Mercy For Animals is on the front lines exposing the cruelty of factory farms and bringing animal abusers to justice. Please consider making a special donation to support our brave investigators who risk so much to expose this cruelty.

The Florida Aquarium, along with 19 other accredited aquariums, has been nominated by a panel of experts for USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice 2018 awards. The Florida Aquarium is the only aquarium representing Florida in the Best Aquariums category. Vote here: www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-aquarium/.

The nominees represent the best aquariums in the country and are recognized for their fun and educational setting, high quality exhibits and visitor interactions, and the vital role they play in animal conservation by taking part in rescue efforts and advocating for the environmental health of our oceans.

Vote every day for The Florida Aquarium until voting ends on Monday, April 30 at midnight EDT. The 10 best winners will be announced on Friday, May 4.

10 reasons why The Florida Aquarium is one of the 10Best:
  1. The Florida Aquarium is a must-see for all animal lovers and marine life enthusiasts. With 7,000+ creatures to discover, you can get up-close with the oceans’ top predators – sharks – in a 500,000-gallon underwater habitat, touch a stingray, enjoy frolicking river otters, venture into Madagascar to see leaping lemurs and marvel at our magnificent giant Pacific octopus.
  2. Our coral experts are working on groundbreaking techniques to significantly increase coral conservation and restoration work that would make us the first in the U.S. to replicate wild coral spawning in a lab with multiple species. More info here: https://bit.ly/2GWFIoF
  3. We have educated more than 1.6+ million students about the importance of healthy oceans and the natural environment.
  4. We rescue, rehabilitate and release endangered sea turtles. And, when completed later this year, our new sea turtle hospital will allow us to amplify our sea turtle rescue and recovery efforts. Guests will also be able to view our turtles in various stages of rehabilitation as we model new dive and feeding pools that will assure their readiness for return to the ocean.
  5. You can swim or dive with our sand tiger sharks (and numerous other finned friends) in our 500,000-gallon coral reef habitat and learn how important sharks are to the health and vitality of our oceans.
  6. We vowed to pitch the plastics. We have teamed up with 22 aquariums that comprise the Aquarium Conservation Partnership to drive a shift away from single-use plastic and toward more sustainable alternatives. The partnership has rolled out a nationwide campaign, "In Our Hands," to empower our 20 million visitors and millions more in our communities to make positive behavior changes and raise awareness around how plastic pollution threatens ocean and freshwater animals.
  7. You can get up-close and personal with our African penguins, an endangered species we are working to help conserve through fieldwork in South Africa and by way of education about these incredible animals.
  8. You can experience The Splash Pad, our expansive outdoor, rainforest-themed kids’ play space featuring both wet and dry play elements, lush landscaping and more.
  9. In 2017, The Florida Aquarium hosted six coastal cleanups and collected more than 332 pounds of debris, tires, a pile of construction rubble and 62 bags of trash.
  10. As a nonprofit, your ticket to our Aquarium helps support our mission to entertain, educate and inspire stewardship of the natural environment

The Florida Aquarium, a nonprofit organization, was recently awarded a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator, America's largest and most-utilized independent evaluator of charities. The coveted 4-star rating, the highest possible rating, is only awarded to the most fiscally responsible organizations. The Florida Aquarium is among the top ten highest rated aquariums in the U.S.

Charity Navigator, which rates about 8,000 charities on a zero-to four-star scale, considers various financial statistics as well as transparency and accountability metrics as a way to give donors a better picture of how a particular charity performs over time and how accountable and transparent each organization is about how its funds are spent.

“We are honored to receive this prestigious rating from Charity Navigator,” said Roger Germann, President & CEO of The Florida Aquarium. “As a leading nonprofit aquarium in the country, we are committed to being excellent stewards of our resources in support of conservation and education while remaining accountable to those who support us.”

Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) is not your typical aquarium. Located on Clearwater’s Island Estates, the establishment works as an animal hospital with the mission of the rescue, rehabilitation and release of marine life.

The story of the rescue and rehabilitation of Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s permanent residents Winter and Hope, both Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, has inspired millions around the world through the movies Dolphin Tale and Dolphin Tale 2.

Winter was found stranded in Mosquito Lagoon, near Cape Canaveral, Florida when she was only two months old, entangled in a crab trap line which cut off circulation to her tail flukes. After disentanglement, she was transported to Clearwater Marine Aquarium for treatment of her extensive injuries. However, despite exhaustive efforts to promote healing, her tail deteriorated and could not be saved. Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics, Inc., together with CMA staff, created a unique plan to attach a prosthetic tail to Winter.

Her story has inspired millions around the world with the message of perseverance and hope. People relate to the strength it takes to overcome obstacles, as brave animals exemplify that every day. By inviting guests to see firsthand how CMA cares for these animals, they create powerful experiences that can change lives and make a difference.

CMA staff and volunteers work each day to rescue marine life and provide the most advanced and effective care to maximize the opportunity to return sick or injured animals to their homes. The animals at Clearwater Marine Aquarium arrive because they are suffering from an illness or severe injury.

Once an animal arrives at CMA, a team of experienced staff biologists, veterinarians and volunteers create a rehabilitation plan specifically developed based on its injury or illness, with the goal of returning it to the wild.

Sometimes the injuries are so severe, or the animal is so young, that it would not be in the animal’s best interest to release it back into the wild. CMA works with agencies such as National Marine Fisheries and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to make these decisions. If the animal is unable to be released back into the wild, it becomes a permanent member of the CMA family, and lives there to serve as an ambassador for its species to help promote environmental conservation.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Education Department is dedicated to inspiring guests of all ages to appreciate the marine environment while promoting conservation. The team strives to develop an understanding for the irreplaceable value of all marine life. By teaching children and adults the importance of conservation, ecology and stewardship, CMA believes they will apply this knowledge to make sustainable choices and take an active part in preserving the marine environment.

FIRST C-SECTION PERFORMED ON A SHARK
IN SEAWORLD HISTORY AT DISCOVERY COVE

Orlando, Fla. (August 1, 2013) - For the first time in SeaWorld’s history, a Cesarean section has been performed on a shark. A team of shark experts and veterinarians performed the groundbreaking procedure on a whitetip reef shark at Discovery Cove, SeaWorld’s sister park, in Orlando on July 18, 2013.

Six months into the shark’s gestation, the park’s animal team noticed a complication with her pregnancy and determined an emergency C-section was necessary.

Whitetip reef sharks give birth to live young.  In this case, four healthy pups were born.  The pups each weighed less than three pounds at birth (1.04 kg-1.25 kg) and were about two feet long (58 cm-62 cm.). The Discovery Cove animal team and vets are continuing to monitor mom and her pups, who are doing well and eating and behaving normally. While these sharks are currently behind the scenes at Discovery Cove, guests can see other whitetip reef shark through glass while snorkeling in The Grand Reef or when participating in SeaVenture, an underwater walking tour where guests -- wearing dive helmets – are able to explore life under the sea.

Discovery Cove is an all-inclusive day resort experience where guests enjoy a one-of-a-kind opportunity to swim with dolphins, snorkel with rays and tropical fish, hand-feed exotic birds and relax on pristine beaches. To discover more, visit DiscoveryCove.com and follow us on Facebook.
