American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization that for 140 years has been first to serve the interests of animals, was named the Outstanding Animal Welfare Organization of the Year by the Pet Philanthropy Circle at the glittering Pet Hero Awards gala in New York City, hosted by beloved voice of NBC’s National Dog Show David Frei and co-chaired by Georgina Bloomberg and Prince Lorenzo Borghese. Adding to the organization’s notable win, longtime supporter, American Humane board member and country music star Naomi Judd was named Humanitarian of the Year.
“Due to American Humane’s outstanding contributions to animal welfare, the organization has been selected by the Executive Board of the Pet Philanthropy Circle for the Animal Welfare Organization of the Year Award,” said Jewel Morris, noted animal advocate and founding president of Pet Philanthropy Circle. “Your commitment to animal welfare exemplifies the dedication that our Board evaluates worthy of this esteemed award.”
For 140 years, American Humane has been first to serve in the protection of animals in every sphere of life – in our homes and communities, on our farms and ranches, on the silver screen, and in human care at zoos, aquariums and conservation centers. The organization also works to save more of the 6-8 million animals relinquished each year to the nation’s shelters and get them into loving, forever homes. And in just the past dozen years, American Humane saved, sheltered and helped more than 80,000 animals caught in disasters and cruelty cases. The organization positively reaches some 1 billion animals with direct services each year – more than any other in its field.
Country star and American Humane Board Member Naomi Judd Also Honored
Adding to American Humane’s win, the Pet Philanthropy Circle honored the country star and the organization’s longtime supporter and board member as the Humanitarian of the Year. The award recognized her wide-ranging charitable work, including her advocacy for America’s military hero dogs. Ms. Judd worked with American Humane to have Congress change the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), mandating that these four-legged veterans be brought home and retired on U.S. soil and reunited with their former handlers after their service is finished. Congress changed and passed the NDAA, which was then signed into law by the President late last year.
“For nearly a century and a half the staff and volunteers at American Humane have worked to be the first to serve in the protection of animals,” said American Humane President and CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert. “We are deeply honored by this award and thank the remarkable and esteemed members of the Pet Philanthropy Circle board, which includes so many of the nation’s leading animal advocates. On behalf of the one billion animals we serve each year, thank you!”

“Meet the Animal Artist” Experience Added to Oakland Zoo’s Animals Saving Animals Annual Art Auction
Oakland, Calif. -- September 15, 2016 -- Oakland Zoo has added a new twist to the third year of their annual “Animals Saving Animals Art Show” to raise money for animal conservation. Bidding winners get to come to the Zoo to be part of the painting experience with the animal artist.
Zoos across the country now sell animal paintings as a way to fundraise, but Oakland Zoo wanted to enhance the concept by personalizing the experience. “We saw that people bought these artworks to connect with the animals, so we decided to offer an experience where people could meet an animal artist up-close and behind-the-scenes, for the ‘creative’ painting process.’ It’s an amazing way to connect with animals at the Zoo, support animal conservation in the wild – and, of course, acquire unique artwork,” said Erin Harrison, Sr. Manager of Marketing & PR at Oakland Zoo.
Artwork created by zoo animals is up for auction on eBay now through Thursday, September 22 at 11am. Artists featured in the Animal Art Show Experience include an elephant, lemur, goat, sun bear, giraffe, parrot, and green monkey. For a complete list of artist names, biographies and bidding link, and additional information on Oakland Zoo’s Animal Art Show Experience, go to: http://www.oaklandzoo.org/Animal_Art_Show_2016.php
“The Animal Art Show Experience is a triple win; it provides fun enrichment activity for our animals, helps support the conservation of wildlife, and draws public attention to the various conservation challenges that animals face,” said Amy Gotliffe, Conservation Director at Oakland Zoo. “The Animal Art Show is also a perfect example of how the entire Oakland Zoo staff embraces our conservation efforts, from our Marketing Department to our Animal Care team. We hope the lucky winners of this unique art know that they took action for wildlife every time they look at it.”
None of the animals are forced or coerced into participating in the Art Show. The painting sessions are conducted with zookeepers, using only positive-reinforcement methods to encourage voluntary participation. The paint used is non-toxic and water based. All funds raised from the auction will benefit Oakland Zoo’s conservation partners, who are working in the field to save wild animals.

Pets in the Classroom invites teachers to submit pictures of the habitats of their classroom pets.
The Pets in the Classroom grant program invites pre-kindergarten through 8th grade teachers with classroom pets to enter the Pets in the Classroom Habitat Contest. September 19th through December 10th, teachers can submit pictures of their classroom pet’s habitat. All entries are being featured on the Pets in the Classroom website, and people are invited to vote for their favorite habitat. The teacher whose entry receives the most votes when the contest ends will be selected as one of the contest winners and one additional teacher will also be selected as a winner based on random selection. Each winner will receive a $100 Amazon Gift Card.
“We encourage all teachers with a classroom pet to enter the habitat contest,” commented Steven T. King, Pet Care Trust Executive Director. “Your students will enjoy seeing their ‘classmate’ featured on the Pets in the Classroom website, and you will help other classes improve their pets' habitats with your ideas. Encourage parents, students and fellow teachers to vote for your habitat and you might win a $100 gift card!”
The Pets in the Classroom grant program provides grants to Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade teachers in both private and public schools for the purpose of purchasing and maintaining classroom pets. Classroom animals are wonderful resources for teachers that, when incorporated into lesson plans, can have a profound impact. Classroom pets not only provide excitement in the classroom, but they also benefit students by teaching them responsible, long-term pet care at an early age and providing the psychological and developmental benefits associated with the human-animal bond. Studies have shown that caring for pets has a positive effect on children, improving school attendance and teaching children responsibility, as well as encouraging nurturing and building self-esteem.

ADOPTABLE ANIMALS GET NEW DIGS IN ANIMAL PLANET’S TWO-PART SPECIAL PET NATION RENOVATION
- Two Non-Profit Animal Shelters Receive Much-Needed Head to Tail Makeovers -
(Los Angeles, CA – September 1, 2016) – Every year, shelters and rescues across the country spend countless hours finding homes for millions of abandoned animals. In Animal Planet’s new two-part special, PET NATION RENOVATION, two deserving shelters receive much needed top-to-bottom makeovers providing animals with a more comfortable stay while awaiting their new family. After the renovations are complete, each shelter holds a local adoption event resulting in many happy “tails.” Part one of PET NATION RENOVATION premieres on Saturday, September 17 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on Animal Planet.
Hosted by animal expert and home renovation enthusiast Dave Salmoni, and featuring the animal shelter renovation experts from Project Pawsitive, the PET NATION RENOVATIONteam completely transforms two shelters - Bandit's Adoption and Rescue of K-9s (BARK) in Ashland, Virginia and Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL) in Pontiac, Michigan.
In the premiere episode, the all-volunteer staff at BARK learn they are the winners of a nationwide contest to find the most deserving shelter. As a result of rescuing more than 4,500 dogs in 10 years, the BARK shelter shows extreme wear and tear. These run-down conditions cause unnecessary stress to the dogs and scare off potential adopters forcing BARK to holds their adoption events offsite.
After four weeks of renovation by the PET NATION team, BARK is outfitted with state-of-the-art kennels, an agility dog park and cost-saving improvements which culminates in an on-site adoption event to find the dogs forever homes. Celebrity dog groomer Jorge Benderskyand animal adoption expert Jill Rappaport are on hand to make sure the dogs look their best and when matched with the perfect family.
The makeover was made possible by Ace Hardware and Delta Faucet, sponsors of the special who provided more than $100,000 for the renovation through fiscal, product and labor donations.
The second episode of PET NATION RENOVATION, which features a makeover the MARL shelter, will air Fall 2016.
PET NATION RENOVATION is produced by All3Media America for Animal Planet. Melinda Toporoff and Dawn Sinsel are executive producers for Animal Planet and Pat Dempsey is the Associate Producer. Gregory J. Lipstone, Leah Hariton and Liz Kerrigan are the executive producers for All3Media America.

Clear Conscience Pet Founder Talkin’ SuperGravy on Talkin’ Pets Radio with Jon Patch Sat. Sept. 10 at 6:30 pm EDT Listen LIVE here: Talkin’ Pets Clear Conscience Pet Interview 9.10.16 at 6:30 pm
SuperGravy® is the 50 Cent Solution for Picky Eating Dogs and Daily Hydration: Pet Industry Icon Anthony Bennie to Reveal New Recipes
SuperGravy, the six-time award-winning pet food topper line, is launching its next generation of products with three new artisan-crafted recipes. The new offerings build on the success of the Clean Label “Au Jus” brown dry gravy mix line that Clear Conscience Pet invented in 2012.
“We are honored to be invited as guests on the popular Talkin’ Pets radio program with Jon Patch,” said CCP Founder and Chief Nutrition Officer Anthony Bennie. “We have spent over a year developing the next generation of SuperGravy and the creative effort shows in the exciting ingredient profiles, new nutrient sources, and sheer deliciousness of our new recipes. Our original Au Jus is now PAW Jus, ARFredo White features Greek yogurt and three Italian cheeses, and BARKinara Red is a marinara for dogs made with tomato, liver, and porcini mushrooms.”
Clear Conscience Pet believes that a great product must offer not only impeccable quality but also good value in these times when natural pet food and treats have become so expensive. “If it’s not affordable for daily use by the average dog-loving family, what’s the point? We are proud to offer the best value in this category with a 50 cents per meal average cost; that is less than 1/3 the price of using canned foods, freeze dried, or premade liquid toppers. After all, Consumers are already paying very high prices for top-end natural dry pet foods, so toppers need to be cost-sensitive,” said Bennie.
The concept of SuperGravy is based on the use of whole superfoods with no synthetic vitamins and 100% Clean Label ingredients. All recipes use chia seed, Atlantic sea kelp, air dried veggies, and sunflower lecithin. All three SuperGravy formulas have been enhanced with digestive enzymes, and probiotics to bring better digestibility and improved gut health.
SuperGravy is a Six-time Award-Winner for nutritional excellence and innovation, and is unique in the growing Pet Food Toppers category as the only dry instant holistic gravy mix for dogs. “SuperGravy transforms dry food into a moist delicious meal, and teaches pet parents to hydrate every dry meal,” said CCP Co-Founder Amanda Malone Bennie. “Digestive issues are rare in dogs eating hydrated diets and all too common in dogs eating dry food only, added Amanda.
SuperGravy has been a hit with pet guardians former canned food users as well who typically switch from using canned pet foods or other toppers for hydration and as taste enhancers for picky eating dogs.
There is also a growing trend of “dry-only” feeders realizing the digestive benefits and major improvement in palatability that comes from feeding a hydrated diet. SuperGravy provides a safe, convenient, low calorie, and cost effective method for daily hydration using the gravy mixes with ordinary tap water to create a moist meal for hungry dogs. For picky eaters experiencing “taste fatigue,” SuperGravy has a virtually 100% dog-approved track record as shown by countless testimonials, reviews, and awards.
The product has also gained many loyal followers whose dogs have experienced decreased appetites for any reason including aging, medications, and illnesses including dogs with cancer on chemotherapy. SuperGravy also facilitates food changes such as lifestage transitions and veterinarian prescribed diets. Rescue groups use the product to keep dogs eating while going through sometimes stressful relocations. Pet sitters, boarding kennels, and the growing Pet Resort and Doggy Day Care business find SuperGravy to be a “must-have” once they try it.
Even freeze dried and dehydrated food users have discovered the benefits of using the product. Instead of just adding water, SuperGravy energizes and re-hydrates these ultra-dry foods with exciting taste and contributes superfood nutrients with every meal.
To make SuperGravy the state-of-the-art in food toppers, the new line also contains added digestive enzymes and probiotics as daily aids to better digestion.
“We wouldn’t settle for anything less than making the very best dog food toppers ever seen,” said Co-Founder Amanda Bennie. “We are proud to say that the reinvented SuperGravy family of pet food toppers sets a new bar of quality, value, and sheer dog enjoyment. Our focus groups prove that these recipes intrigue dog loving consumers, and test feeding leaves dogs with big smiles, wagging tails, and begging for more.”

Lamb Trachey Chewz™ Ideal for Small and Big Dogs Alike!

for smaller dogs. With pasture-raised lamb as the protein source, they provide an
excellent alternative for sensitive or allergic dogs. +SuperFood Dry Rub
Beef Trachey™ Chewz: Unique “open canoe cut” stimulates dogs to gnaw on
the edges of these American beef trachea; this “edge action” scrapes teeth and
stimulates gums far more than closed trachea “tubes.” +SuperFood Dry Rub
What makes them healthier than similar treats? You’ll see lots of “plain” lamb lung and
beef trachea treats on the market. They are are healthy alternatives to high carb treats like
biscuits and “cookies.” So we took a good idea and made it SUPER by inventing a process
that naturally infuses treats and chews with nutrient-rich “superfoods:”
Cold-milled flaxseed provides a natural source of Omega-3 fatty acids;
Air-dried spinach, tomato, and carrot provide concentrated sources of plant-based natural
compounds called phytonutrients;
Scientific studies say that Omega 3s and Phytonutrients may contribute to immune system health.

“The heartwarming stories of the five ACE award winners exemplify the loyalty, commitment and companionship dogs give us,” said AKC Spokesperson Gina DiNardo. “Whether providing comfort or saving lives, each of these dogs has in some way improved the lives of others and the impact they have made on their community is truly inspiring.”

This year’s ACE winners are:
Uniformed Service K-9: “Radar,” a Bloodhound handled by Frank Hurst of Kiowa, Colorado
“K-9 Deputy Radar” is a four-year-old AKC-registered Bloodhound serving in Elbert County, Colorado. His training for finding missing persons and tracking down criminals and evidence began at a mere ten weeks of age. Radar has worked cases with close to three dozen law-enforcement-agencies, including the Colorado Bureau of Investigation as well as the FBI. He has also assisted with cases for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Additionally, Radar is among just a handful of Bloodhound K-9s assisting NecroSearch International, a national group that solves cold-case homicides. Radar’s file includes an extensive list of successfully concluded searches.
Service Dog: “Teddie,” a Labrador Retriever owned by Krystal Greco of North East, Maryland
“Teddie” is a five-year-old Labrador Retriever certified with Canine Partners for Life. She is the service dog for her owner, Krystal Greco. Krystal suddenly became paralyzed from the waist down at age 14. Unable to attend school regularly, the housebound teenager began feeling depressed, isolated and lonely. Krystal contacted Canine Partners for Life in mid-2012 and Teddie came into her life the following year.
Teddie does everything from opening and closing doors to alerting Krystal, who cannot feel anything below the waist, when she might need to use the bathroom. With Teddie’s help, Krystal has earned three college associates degrees, works a part time job, travels and volunteers as a spokesperson and demonstrator for Canine Partners for Life. This fall Teddie will be by Krystal’s side as she begins her baccalaureate degree at Maryland University College.
Therapy Dog: “Jackie,” a Sussex Spaniel owned by Jan Hepper of San Francisco, California
“Jackie,” officially known as GCH CH Riverotter's Little Jackie Paper RA THD CGC, is an eight-year-old Sussex Spaniel certified through San Francisco SPCA Animal Assisted Therapy program. A new concept in airline passenger comfort was created in December 2013 when San Francisco International Airport launched the Wag Brigade, a program that brings therapy dogs to airport terminals in an effort to make air travel more enjoyable for passengers. Thanks to her eye-catching beauty and her cheerful, friendly disposition so typical of her breed, Jackie quickly became a star of this program after retiring from her career as a top show dog.
Each dog in the program is carefully selected based on temperament and airport suitability. The dogs roam the terminals wearing vests that read “Pet Me”. In a time of heightened security that has made airports stressful places for many, the Wag Brigade has made a soothing difference for passengers and airport employees alike. When Jackie is not busy decreasing stress levels at the airport, she visits Stanford University and San Francisco State University to help students relax during exams.
Search and Rescue Dog: “Bodie,” a Belgian Malinois owned and handled by Amy Lavoie of Santee, California
“Bodie,” an eight-year-old Belgian Malinois, is among the small circle of search-and-rescue dogs trained and certified in three distinct disciplines: article search, trailing and human-remains detection. Bodie and his handler, Amy, have assisted local and federal law-enforcement in Southern California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah for the past seven years. Whether they are working in the sweltering desert heat or in bustling cities, this duo keeps very busy, averaging 20 searches per year along with several hours of training. “He has quite the reputation for all the kisses he gives,” his nominator, Randy Thomsen, says, “and there have been many officers that have finished their shift with Bodie fur on their uniforms from the loving lean he does whenever he meets someone.”
Exemplary Companion Dog: “Haus,” a German Shepherd Dog owned by Tonya DeLuca of Tampa, Florida
“Haus,” a two-year-old German Shepherd Dog, owned by the DeLuca family of Tampa, Florida, fought for his life after stepping between seven-year-old Molly DeLuca and a rattlesnake. Haus was in the backyard with Molly and her grandmother when Mrs. DeLuca saw the dog jump several times but still stand his ground. She saw blood coming from Haus and he began limping and crying and she quickly realized it was a rattlesnake that he was facing. Veterinarians identified three snake bites on Haus, who was injected with substantial amounts of venom; so much that he needed a steady drip of antivenin, instead of the more common one to two doses. Haus was in intensive care, his life on the line, after faithfully protecting the little girl. He was able to recover from his injuries and returned home to the DeLuca family. Mrs. DeLuca is extremely grateful that Haus was there to protect her daughter from what could have been a deadly incident.
The More Pet Owners Learn about Scientific Research on the Benefits of the Human-Animal Bond, the Better They’ll Care for their Companion Animals
(Washington, D.C.) September 7, 2016 – The Human Animal Bond Research Initiative (HABRI) Foundation today announced the findings of a new survey on the impact of knowledge of the scientific benefits of the human-animal bond on how pet owners care for their companion animals. The survey asked pet owners about their awareness of research that shows pets improve human health and found that this knowledge has the power to motivate them to take better care of their pets in important ways.
“Scientific research shows that pets are good for our health, improving heart health, relieving stress and positively impacting conditions from autism to PTSD,” said HABRI Executive Director, Steven Feldman. “Now, for the first time, we have data to show that it’s a two-way street – when we know how good pets are for us, we are more likely to take better care of them!”
According to the survey, seventy-one percent of pet owners were aware of scientifically-documented health benefits from pets. Most importantly, when asked how knowledge of the scientific research on the human-animal bond would affect their actions:
- 89% of pet owners said they were more likely to take better care of their pets
- 75% of pet owners said they were more likely to microchip a pet to ensure it can be found if lost or stolen
- 51% of pet owners said they were more likely to purchase pet health insurance
- 62% of pet owners said they were less likely to skip visits to the veterinarian
- 74% of pet owners said they were less likely to give up a pet for any reason
- 88% of pet owners said they were more likely to provide their pets with high-quality nutrition
- 92% of pet owners said they were more likely to maintain their pet’s health, including keeping up with vaccines and preventative medicine
The survey also examined how different generations of pet owners viewed and reacted to the human-animal bond. For millennials, in particular, learning about the scientific research on the health benefits of pets had a large impact:
- 80% of millennials said this information makes them more likely to bring their pet along when they go out
- 75% of millennials said this information makes them more likely to travel with their pets
- 74% of millennials said this information makes them more likely to get an additional pet
- 74% of millennials think employers should consider allowing employees to bring pets to work
“When pet owners are educated about the scientific research on the human-animal bond, the response is tremendously positive for the welfare of the pet population,” said researcher Michael Cohen, Ph.D. “This research tells me that veterinarians and animal shelters should be talking about the benefits of pets to human health.”
The survey also asked pet owners about increased support for pet ownership in society:
- 84% agree health and life insurance companies should give discounts for owing a pet
- 87% would be more likely to buy products from pet-friendly businesses
