Lessons from recent disasters on accounting for the safety of animals and humans alike

Some of the most striking news stories from natural disasters are of animals tied to trees or cats swimming through murky flood waters. Although the issue of evacuating pets has gained more attention in recent disasters, there are still many failures throughout local and national systems of managing pets and accommodating animals in emergencies.

All Creatures Safe and Sound: The Social Landscape of Pets in Disasters (Publication Date: August 31, 2021) is a comprehensive study of what goes wrong in our disaster response that shows how people can better manage pets in emergencies—from the household level to the large-scale, national level. Authors Sarah DeYoung and Ashley Farmer offer practical disaster preparedness tips while they address the social complexities that affect disaster management and animal rescue. They track the developments in the management of pets since Hurricane Katrina, including an analysis of the 2006 PETS Act, which dictates that animals should be included in hazard and disaster planning. Other chapters focus on policies in place for sheltering and evacuation, coalitions for animal welfare and the prevention of animal cruelty, organizational coordination, decision-making, preparedness, the role of social media in animal rescue and response, and how privilege and power shape disaster experiences and outcomes.

Using data they collected from seven major recent American disasters, ranging from Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Florence to the Camp, Tubbs, and Carr Fires in California and the Hawaii Lava Flow, the authors provide insights about the successes and failures of animal care. All Creatures Safe and Sound also outlines what still needs to change to best prepare for the safety and welfare of pets, livestock, and other companion animals in times of crisis.

Sarah E. DeYoung is an Assistant Professor at the University of Delaware as a Core Faculty member for the Disaster Research Center and the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice and the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy and Administration.

Ashley K. Farmer is an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Sciences at Illinois State University.

Taylor Rae Drops New Music Video, “Window,” To Commemorate Discovery of LSD
On Bicycle Day

Mad Twenties #9 On Americana Music Album Chart This Week

Nashville, TN (April 19, 2022) Taylor Rae drops her fourth music video, “Window,” today on Bicycle Day, in commemoration of Albert Hofmann’s discovery of lysergic acid diethylamide 71 years ago. On this day in 1943, Hofmann ingested a minute amount of the compound, rode his bicycle home, and consequently underwent significant shifts of consciousness. Rae is hopeful that renewed interest and recent medical research into the drug as a therapeutic will provide more opportunities for individuals to explore additional perspectives and gain new insights on their personal soul journeys.

Taylor was inspired to write “Window” following a personal, positive psychedelic experience. “I hope it encourages people not to be so quick to judge another’s spiritual path,” Rae states. “Each person should determine – in their own time - the best way to connect to their inner self or source energy.”

Taylor’s “story behind the song” is available on her Instagram.

Are you willing to search
Outside of yourself
Or what you think you might be?
Are you willing to go
Step into the zone
Cross over the line you've been dreaming? (T. Rae)

The video, directed by William Gawley and produced by Michelle Robertson for Charlotte Avenue Pictures, premiered today on Americana Highways. The song is from Taylor’s Top 10 Americana Music Chart album, MAD TWENTIES

Filmed in a warehouse in Nashville, the clip opens with images of old windows floating in an endless black space. “We simulated an acid trip to create a visual experience,” Rae recalls. “It’s a mirage that reflects the lyrics.” Throughout the video, Taylor walks among the windows, many of which portray “trippy” images that range from organic, nature vistas to geometrics and Woodstock-era swirls of kaleidoscopic color. Gawley recalls, “Taylor and I agreed that we didn’t want a ‘typical’ music video. With green screen technology, specialized lighting and animation, combined with the windows and imagery, we made the perfect marriage of cutting-edge and old school technology. It was a joy to direct.” For Robertson, who helped choose everything from props to wardrobe to the color scheme, the effort was a labor of love. “The 60s era really resonates for me and for Taylor,” she says.

ABOUT TAYLOR RAE
At the age of two, Taylor learned Carole King’s ‘It’s Too Late’ and sang it to anyone who would listen. By the age of seven, she was taking private vocal and piano lessons. When she was eight, her parents took her to see Jewel in concert. “She was alone on stage with her guitar, singing her songs – I already knew that’s what I wanted to do, but seeing Jewel do it was a real moment for me.” At the age of 10, Taylor started to write her own material and taught herself guitar at 12. She performed in musical theatre productions throughout high school and focused on her craft. Taylor’s eclectic style was influenced by Grace Potter, Janis Joplin, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Jewel, Simon & Garfunkel, and Steely Dan. She has performed at Kuumbwa Jazz, the Catalyst, the Hotel Café in Hollywood, The Rustic in Houston, the second stage at the legendary Stubb’s in Austin, Santa Cruz’s Moe’s Alley, Nashville’s renowned Bluebird Café, Lexington’s The Lyric Theatre and the Asheville, NC Isis Music Hall. She has also played popular Northern California festivals, including DIO Fest (Boulder Creek) and Redwood Mountain Faire (Felton). Taylor has opened for artists including Ray Wylie Hubbard, Brandy Clark, Kristian Bush, Reggae musician Mike Love, Natalie Brady and The Stone Foxes. Originally from Santa Cruz, California, Taylor currently resides in Austin, Texas. She recently signed an exclusive worldwide booking deal with The Kurland Agency. Her debut album, MAD TWENTIES, hit Top 10 this week. Taylor enjoys reading, practicing yoga and spending time with her long-haired Dachshund, Winnie.

Bunnies Spring Into Action to Boost Little Girl’s Confidence in Tender Children’s Tale

Denver, CO, March 7, 2022 — A colony of cottontails breakdance, bebop and hip hop their way across the pages of It's Just a Bunnypalooza to teach lovable protagonist Lizzy some new dance moves just in time for the school talent show.

It's Just a Bunnypalooza is the third book in the It’s Just So… series from the award-winning team of Brenda Faatz and Peter Trimarco. As with all “Lizzy” books, (including the recent, fun-filled romp, Now What?) It's Just a Bunnypalooza springs to life with adventure-in-rhyme, fantastical humor and playful made-up words that pop into Lizzy’s mind.

When the contagiously enthusiastic Lizzy tells her classmates that she's learning jump-jivin’ moves from bunnies, the children giggle at her over-active imagination. Feeling embarrassed and self-conscious, Lizzy decides she no longer wants to be laughed at.

Lizzy becomes an avid "non-believer" and ceases any further communication with animals. Naturally, the bunnies organize an intervention. These furry little creatures will not allow Lizzy’s fandango to falter, and they sure don’t want to lose a good friend.

Written with young children ages 4 to 8 in mind, It's Just a Bunnypalooza provides multiple social-emotional-learning moments with subtle yet effective messaging about living out loud and staying true to yourself.

It's Just a Bunnypalooza has been praised by Kirkus Reviews as “Infectiously enthusiastic about dance and imagination. The bouncy, vibrant verbs make this an excellent read-aloud tale … full-color, whimsical illustrations nicely capture the story’s kinetic joy.”

Brenda Faatz has an undeniable connection with children. Some say it’s because they instinctively know “one of their own.” A graduate of the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in Musical Theatre, Brenda is a professional singer, dancer, actor, writer and director. Having established herself as a critically-acclaimed actor while performing on stages from Minneapolis to Aspen, Boulder and Denver, Brenda has turned her talents to creating fresh content for youngsters. She has penned music, lyrics and scripts for original musical theatre works for children, and is the founder and director of the Notable Kids Arts Center in Denver. While collaborating with her husband and illustrator Peter Trimarco, Brenda has authored the award-winning It’s Just So … children’s book series because, as she likes to say, “no one ever told me I couldn’t.”

Peter Trimarco started his professional doodling career as an editorial cartoonist before turning to commercial art and designing packaging for both the film and music industries. Along the way, he also established himself on the business side of music as an executive producer and creative director on over 40 productions, with two going on to win Grammy nominations. While staying in the entertainment field, he published a trade magazine for the film industry and ultimately brought his creative juices and publishing expertise to the printed page for youngsters. Peter is a graduate of Lake Forest College, where he studied Literature and Fine Arts. In addition to designing album covers and book covers, he is the illustrator of Ella McBella In The Dark by Laura Pells, and the It’s Just So … book series, which he co-created with his wife, Brenda Faatz.

Illumination’s Sing 2 has been playing in theaters and delighting audiences everywhere since Dec. 22. The blockbuster franchise has now earned more than $1 billion worldwide.

Illumination’s Sing 2 celebrates the thrill of chasing your dreams, as the ever-optimistic Buster Moon and his all-star cast of performers prepare to launch their most dazzling stage extravaganza yet …all in the glittering entertainment capital of the world. There’s just one hitch: They first have to persuade the world’s most reclusive rock star—played by global music icon Bono, in his animated film debut—to join them.

With dozens of contemporary and classic hit songs, electrifying performances and breathtaking artistry, Sing 2 serves as an emotional reminder about the importance of dreaming big and the power of music to heal.

Sing 2 features all of the characters audiences fell in love with in the first film (voiced by Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, Taron Egerton, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll and Garth Jennings), plus additional characters played by music superstars Pharrell Williams and Halsey, actors Bobby Cannavale and Letitia Wright and comedians Eric André and Chelsea Peretti.

The film is written and directed by acclaimed returning filmmaker Garth Jennings and is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Janet Healy.
