Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department (Animal Services) and Friends of Miami
Animals Foundation Inc. (FoMA) are partnering to launch Wellness of Wheels (WOW), a mobile
pet veterinary service, through FoMA's donation of a Mobile Wellness Unit and generous
$500,000 contribution.
With the new Mobile Wellness Unit, Animal Services and FoMA aim to improve the wellbeing of
Miami-Dade County pets in need of wellness services at a time when many pet parents are
juggling finances to meet their basic necessities. Pets will receive free medical care through the
WOW unit including physical exams, wellness vaccines and boosters, heartworm and fecal
parasite screening, deworming, heartworm and flea/tick prevention, ear cleaning, nail trimming
and referrals for spay/neuter surgery or other needed medical services. FoMA will pay for one
year of staffing, equipment and supplies, and Animal Services will operate the WOW unit for two
additional years.
The WOW unit will be rolling into selected communities, including Miami Gardens, Little Havana,
Liberty City, Homestead, and the Redlands. Miami-Dade County pet owners will be able either
walk-in or schedule appointments for their pets by contacting 311.
"FoMA exists to save and improve the lives of homeless pets in Miami-Dade County. The best
way we can do that is to prevent pets from becoming homeless in the first place. Medical
concerns are among the leading reasons that owners surrender or abandon their pets, and if we
can instead help keep those animals in forever families that love them by supporting Animal
Services in this endeavor--that is absolutely achieving our mission,” said Yolanda Berkowitz,
FoMA Founder and President. “By providing free services for families who are struggling to
afford veterinary care through the mobile wellness unit, we are closing the gap for at-risk pets."
The WOW is one of several initiatives Animal Services and FoMA have partnered on to improve
the welfare of pets in Miami-Dade County.

RALEIGH, NC (August 5, 2021) - The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the health of all dogs and their owners, announces that Dr. Cynthia Otto is the recipient of the 2021 Asa Mays, DVM Excellence in Canine Health Research Award.

Named for Dr. Asa Mays, a member of CHF’s first Board of Directors in 1995, the award is a biennial honor presented to a research investigator who demonstrates meritorious achievements in furthering the mission of identifying, characterizing, and treating canine disease and ailments. Stephanie A. Montgomery, DVM, PhD, DACVP, Chair of CHF’s Scientific Review Committee, will present the award during the 2021 AKC Canine Health Foundation National Parent Club Canine Health Conference on Saturday, August 14. The conference, sponsored by Purina, will follow a virtual format this year and features distinguished researchers presenting the latest medical and scientific advancements in canine health.

The cornerstone of Dr. Otto’s AKC Canine Health Foundation funded research has been the 9/11 Medical Surveillance Study, now in its 20th year. Since 2001, Dr. Otto has received almost $600,000 in funding to study the physical and behavioral consequences of search and rescue dog deployment to the 9/11 disaster sites. To date, the work has produced 11 peer-reviewed publications describing the short and long-term effects of deployment on toxicology, behavior, mortality, the dog-handler relationship, and more. Findings will help us protect not only the health and safety of search and rescue dogs, but provide valuable translational information benefitting the health of human handlers and first responders.

“Dr. Otto’s groundbreaking research and dedication to advancing the health of working dogs and their handlers exemplifies the AKC Canine Health Foundation’s mission and vision,” says Dr. Montgomery. “This One Health approach can accelerate medical discoveries that impact both species. We are honored to present Dr. Otto with this award and look forward to our continued collaboration to benefit the health of all dogs and their owners.”

Data analysis from the 9/11 Medical Surveillance Study is ongoing with funding through CHF Grant 02322: Analysis of the Health, Behavioral, and Longevity Data Collected in the 9/11 Medical Surveillance Longitudinal Study. This work is part of CHF’s $11.4M active research portfolio encompassing all aspects of canine health. View CHF’s Research Grants Portfolio at akcchf.org/portfolio.

Below are the details for our event that is starting Saturday.  It was going to be started Sunday on National CBD Day, but I wanted to have it active for your show, Talkin' Pets

We have worked alongside a variety of animal rescues and shelters and have seen CBD provide these organizations a critical tool for decreasing animal stress during fire evacuations, transport, and from sometimes crowded shelter conditions.

We have also seen CBD provide some of our dog shelters with an invaluable tool to meet the needs of their more challenging cases, many of whom have chronic health issues, injuries, and behavioral challenges caused by chronic neglect or abuse.

Two of the rescues we have worked with really go above and beyond.  They both are entirely funded by donations, and focus on the “hard cases”.  The dogs that will be difficult or expensive to find homes for.  Many of these dogs are the victims of abuse, neglect, injuries, or abandonment.  Dogs that are older, have broken legs, pneumonia, parvo, severe skin infections, or have been starved.  In most shelters these dogs would be euthanized, but they are given a chance because of the work of rescues like Northwest Dog Project and Love Leo.

In observance of National CBD Day, Green Element is running a “BUY 1 GIVE 1” promotion to benefit our partners at Northwest Dog Project and Love Leo.  Rather than giving our customers a discount for National CBD Day, we are asking them to join us in "paying it forward" to support the work these groups do.

For every bottle of Green Element Hemp Oil for Pets that is purchased through our website between August 7th and August 22, we will give a free bottle to Northwest Dog Project and Love Leo.

Information about both rescues below:

A Guide to Discovering the Spiritual Agreements between Our Souls and Those of our Animal Companions Animal lovers are extraordinary. Despite awareness that we will probably outlive our beloved pets, we are still drawn, time and time again, to the connection, joy, and unconditional love that come with sharing our lives, homes, and laps with animals. Many of us feel something deeper than just companionship with our animal friends—a heart-to-heart connection felt all the way to the soul level. Revealing the higher purpose and soul mission behind our relationships with our animal companions, Tammy Billups explores the spiritual contracts that are created when a human bonds with an animal and shows how we come into each other’s lives for a reason. Providing real-life examples, Billups explains why animals choose, at the soul level, to have certain perceived negative experiences, such as physical or behavioral issues, to evolve their souls, clear karma, and help our soul’s evolution. She shows that human and animal souls orchestrate every experience and interaction that holds potential for transformation and healing, including the final transition. She demonstrates the inner dynamics of the animal-human relationship to help animal lovers understand their soul contracts with their pets. The inspirational, real-life examples of animal-human tandem healings that Billups facilitated identify the soul contracts within each pairing that transformed feelings of grief, loss, abandonment, betrayal, trauma, abuse, and anxiety. The author reveals how animals we have previously loved and shared our lives with come back, either on the spirit level or reincarnated in a new animal form, to support us. Offering peace and hope to those who’ve lost beloved animal companions, she describes what she’s witnessed during healing sessions with animals in the weeks before they transition and during their passing. Billups also includes practical instructions for identifying different types of animal soul contracts and connecting with and enlisting the help of your light team or spirit guides. By discovering the soul agreements that underlie our animal partnerships, we can find meaning in the issues that arise with our animals and ourselves, support our souls’ mutual evolution, and allow the soul contracts to weave their spiritual magic in the animal-human relationship. Author Bio: Tammy Billups is a transformational soul healer and pioneer on the animal-human sacred soul partnership. She’s a sought after holistic healer, the creator of animal-human Tandem Healings, and a Certified Interface Therapist. She has appeared on CNN’s The Daily Share, Primetime Live ABC, and Oprah. She lives near Atlanta, Georgia.
