Monkeez Makes a Difference™ Delivers Second Donation to Charity Partners, Debuts New Characters and Pet Toys at NY Toy Fair

New products join innovative philanthropy program in which children choose one of three charities to direct special donation

(Charleston, SC) – Monkeez Makes a Difference, the educational, charitable program for children from MVP Group International, is adding several new lovable sock-monkey characters and toys to the philanthropic line. Ten new knit and mini plush characters and eight new pet toys will join the more than 90 existing products in the family. The new products will debut during the New York Toy Fair in Booth 2878 at the Javits Center from February 10 to 13, 2013.

In addition, the organization announces it has delivered its second round of donations totaling $19,847.75 this week to its three nationally renowned charity partners including Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, Samaritan’s Purse and Best Friends Animal Society. Children selected which charity to donate to through the first-of-its-kind interactive program that teaches the importance of philanthropy. Thanks to the support of the program by families across the country, Monkeez Makes a Difference has donated a total of more than $67,000 to the three charities since the website launched in October 2012.

Monkeez Makes a Difference is an innovative and interactive experience that teaches children the importance of helping others through kid-friendly tools including the best-selling Genuine Monkeez and Friends™ plush characters, online games and real-life Do Good challenge trading cards. A special donation of 10 percent of the wholesale price is made on the child’s behalf to one of the three charities of his or her choice. The program launched in July for retailers, and the online donation and games launched in September. In October and November, the program distributed the first round of donations to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, Samaritan’s Purse and Best Friends Animal Society.


The new knit characters are made of acrylic yarn and include magnets in the paws for added play fun and snuggling. The knit characters retail for approximately $19.99 and include:

(Greenwich, CT - 2013) —The American Pet Products Association (APPA) and the Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA) are pleased to announce Global Pet Expo 2013 was a big success, reporting record-breaking numbers in exhibitors, buyer and media attendance and total booths sold. Experiencing an increase in growth on all fronts, the 2013 Show featured 5,327 buyers in attendance, a 5 percent increase over last year, more than 3,000 new pet product launches, 964 exhibitors and 2,686 booths sold – the highest post-show numbers reported in Global Pet Expo’s nine-year history. Total show attendance came to just over 13,000 people.

Also released at the Show were record-breaking industry figures, as well as results from APPA’s latest Survey showing pet ownership at an all time high; both releases can be found in the Association’s press room at www.americanpetproducts.org.

“There’s no arguing that this industry continues to grow and there’s certainly no better place than at Global Pet Expo for exhibitors to showcase their products and give thousands of buyers from around the world a first look,” said Andrew Darmohraj, APPA senior vice president and trade show director. “We’d truly like to thank all the buyers, exhibitors, and media who participated in this year’s show making this our largest event to date.”

The 2013 Show yielded more new product launches than any other show in the industry, and had more than 900 entries into the New Products Showcase alone.

Ranked one of the top 100 trade shows in the nation by Trade Show Executive Magazine, the 2013 Show grew its international presence by 19 percent with 172 international exhibitors, up from 145 in 2012. Likewise, 27 percent of the attendees were international buyers that represented 71 countries, solidifying Global Pet Expo as a key trading opportunity for companies from around the world.

The 2013 Show also saw record-setting media attendance ranging from pet industry specific magazines and bloggers to major national media outlets like Good Morning America, TODAY, Hallmark and USA Today, further demonstrating the widespread interest in pets.

Social Media played a key role in the 2013 Show as well. During the week of the Show, there were 4,300 tweets about Global Pet Expo from buyers, exhibitors and media alike, generating over 13.5 million impressions. The Global Pet Expo Twitter page has grown 38 percent over the past year and the Facebook page has grown 36 percent. Global Pet Expo’s YouTube channel has shown the greatest increase at over 29,000 views, up 58 percent from the 2012 Show.

This year, award-winning pet lifestyle journalist, author and spokesperson, Sandy Robins was honored with Global Pet Expo’s annual “Excellence in Journalism and Outstanding Contributions to the Pet Industry Award” for her commitment to the industry. Robins accepted the award February 21st at the media-exclusive Purina® Media Reception at Global Pet Expo.

Now in its third year, the New Products Showcase Awards Presentation also proved successful. The ‘Best in Show’ red carpet ceremony took place on the show floor and was hosted by veterinarian and media personality, Dr. Marty Becker. With more entrants in the showcase than ever before, buyers narrowed down top picks out of more than 900 products across nine categories to determine the “Best in Show” winners. Becker also gave a nod to his favorites with his annual “Becker’s Best” awards.

“The 3,000 new product launches at this year’s show included advances in technology, like self-cleaning fish tanks and pet doors you can control from your smart phone, as well as advances in enrichment products from tennis ball cannons to ice cube vitamin supplement kits,” said Darmohraj. “Whether you’ve been in this industry for years and have dozens of products or you are just starting out with a single product launch, Global Pet Expo is a must attend event.”

(Greenwich, CT— January 17, 2012)— The American Pet Products Association (APPA) and Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA) are pleased to announce that TODAY show correspondent and Animal Advocate, Jill Rappaport is the 2012 recipient of Global Pet Expo’s annual “Excellence in Journalism and Outstanding Contributions to the Pet Industry Award”.

Rappaport will personally accept the award Thursday, March 1, 2012 in Orlando, Florida at The Purina® Media Reception at Global Pet Expo. This media-exclusive event is held in conjunction with Global Pet Expo, the pet industry’s largest annual tradeshow, taking place February 29 – March 2, 2012 at the Orange County Convention Center. Global Pet Expo attendees include independent pet product retailers, distributors and mass market buyers, media and other qualified individuals from the pet industry.

Rappaport has been on TODAY for 20 years. She served as the entertainment correspondent for the first 17 years, but when her beloved dog Jack got bone cancer, her life and career changed forever. While chronicling Jack's illness on the show, she realized that animal welfare issues were her calling and so her path changed. In her popular, award-winning "Bow To Wow" series, shelter dogs get a makeover and a second chance at life, and through her work she has helped to save hundreds of horses that were severely abused. Since its inception, “Bow to Wow” has had a 100% success record, and even Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps has adopted one of the dogs from Jill’s segment. She also keeps TODAY viewers informed about the latest health trends for pets. She developed a clothing line for Pendleton for women and pets, which benefited the Jack and Jill Fund for animal cancer.

Rappaport also received the New York City Parks Citizen award from the Mounted Auxiliary unit. She was honored for Outstanding Community Service from the LI Veterinary Medical Association, was just named the ASPCA Good Will Equine Welfare Ambassador, and ended 2011 with the coveted honor of ringing the NYSE Opening Bell for animal adoption. Ms. Rappaport lives on a farm with her four rescue dogs and six horses, whom she refers to as her "fur angels."

(GREENWICH, Conn.) – Nearly a quarter of dog owners bring pets on trips throughout the year according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2011 / 2012 National Pet Owners Survey, which includes holiday trips as well. While some owners (and pets) may find holiday traveling stressful, ensure easy, safe and comfortable traveling with furry family members with the following tips and products manufactured by APPA members. 

 

Buckle Up

While road-tripping and traveling by car during the holidays, make sure pets are properly restrained to prevent driver distraction and to keep pets, passengers and other drivers on the road safe. With dogs taking approximately five car trips per year (according to APPA’s 2011 / 2012 National Pet Owners Survey), it is crucial to keep pooches properly secure and comfortable. American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2011/2012 National Pet Owners Survey cites pets help instill responsibilities among children  

(Greenwich, CT) – In addition to companionship, affection, love and company, a top benefit of owning pets includes teaching children responsibility. According to APPA’s 2011 / 2012 National Pet Owners Survey, 58 percent of small animal owners rank teaching children responsibilities as a key benefit in owning pets, followed by 44 percent of equine owners and 43 percent of reptile owners, reinforcing the idea that pet ownership is, in fact, a great teaching tool for children.

“It’s refreshing to see children not only helping to care for their pets, but learning valuable life lessons and responsibilities from them as well,” said Bob Vetere, president of APPA. “There are so many joys and benefits pets of all types bring to our lives, and they truly help instill responsibility among children from ensuring they have plenty of food and water to helping them receive daily exercise and play.”

Celebrating the joys and benefits pets bring to the lives of children specifically, APPA is currently accepting poems for its 4th Annual Pets Add Life Children’s Poetry Contest.

“Every submission we receive for our Children’s Poetry Contest is the child’s expression of just how much their pet means to them and the happiness these companions bring to their lives,” said Vetere.

Students in grades 3rd-8th are invited to write a unique poem about a pet, what they love about them, the joys they bring, and then post it online at www.PetsAddLife.org or mail their final poem and submission form to: Pets Add Life, 661 Sierra Rose Dr., Reno, NV 89511. Deadline for submissions is January 31, 2012 at 5:00pm EST.

One student from each grade level (six total) nationwide will win a $250 gift certificate for pet products, and a “by-line” in a nationally circulated publication. In addition, the six winning students’ classrooms will each win a $1,000 scholarship to spend on pet related education.
