Two Companies from Bend Oregon Team up for the 2021 Stage Stop Sled Dog Race
Bend, OR – January 19, 2021 – Two local companies from Bend, OR are joining forces for the highly anticipated 2021 Stage Stop Sled Dog Race, which is set to kick off on January 29th in Jackson Hole Wyoming. Alpine Outfitters, makers of handcrafted and high-quality gear for working and active dogs, will be sponsoring Mount Bachelor’s Oregon Trail of Dreams sled dog team by providing them with gear for the upcoming race.
Beginning in Jackson, WY this premier “stage” format sled dog race is hosted by the area’s local communities. Teams race on public lands of the Bridger-Teton, Shoshone, & Caribou-Targhee National Forests, competing for $165,000 in prize money & the elusive title of “Stage Stop Champion.” The Pedigree® Stage Stop Race, now in its 26th year, intends to move forward following all federal, state, and local COVID-19 public health guidelines. Oregon Trail of Dreams is best known for giving their customers a wonderful experience providing sled dog tours at Mt. Bachelor. Founded by the well-known and admired American dog musher, Rachael Scdoris, and her dad, Jerry Scdoris; Oregon Trails of Dreams consists of a professional team of guides that have more than 100 years of combined experience to provide guests with an unforgettable, fun and safe experience. In 2006, Rachael became the first legally blind person to complete the 1,049+ mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race across the U.S. state of Alaska. She is well known in the sled dog world and a local community of Bend celebrity.
“My father and I are unable to participate in this year’s Stage Stop Race due to a few unforeseen circumstances. However, we are thrilled to announce that Rafael Nelson, our dear friend and a trusted employee at Trail of Dreams, will be taking on the race with our dogs!” expresses Rachael Scdoris.
Rafael is a charismatic 29-year old man who lives in Bend Oregon. He’s a 2nd year musher and has a real passion and talent for driving sled dogs. Rafael guides rafting trips on the Rogue River in the summer and sledding trips at Mt. Bachelor in the winter. Four years ago, he learned how to run dogs at the Scdoris kennel in Oregon. The race team has been having great training runs with ATVs through the Oregon Badlands Wilderness Area this year. Jerry, Rachael’s father, will be accompanying Rafael to the start of the race and will be his support person throughout the seven-day event.
Rafael says, “I’m excited to get my team out on the beautiful Wyoming trails and see what they can do. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with some of the amazing dog people I met last year and seeing some new faces.”
