101 Rescue Puppies: One Family's Story of Fostering Dogs, Love, and Trust By Kathy Callahan New book offers A unique and cheering look into one family’s journey of fostering over 100 puppies and finding them homes “These are love stories, plain and simple.” — JENNIFER S. HOLLAND, author of the New York Times bestselling Unlikely Friendships series “Told with humor and humility, 101 Rescue Puppies is as entertaining as it is inspiring.” — TRAER SCOTT, author of Shelter Dogs and Finding Home Over the past decade, Kathy Callahan’s family has taken in more than 100 rescue puppies from shelters. Each pup has an endearing story, and in this delightful photo-filled book, Callahan shares many of them. Her family didn’t set out to be puppy saviors, but as Callahan puts it, “Somebody had surrendered a mother dog, Nala, and her less-than-a-month-old pups at the local shelter. . . . I thought about that exhausted nursing mom who’d been caring for those seven puppies around the clock, only to find herself suddenly homeless. There are a lot of terrible things that happen in life, and I can’t do a darned thing about most of them. It struck me that this was a tiny little tragedy in my corner of the world that our family could remedy.” A heartwarming read, this is also an inspiring example of finding your own way — through that one special thing you can do to light a light, instead of cursing the darkness. Any dog owner can tell you that dogs are capable of that defining human emotion, love. Science, however, will disagree. Clive Wynne is a noted scientist who offers proof that dogs feel love, generate love, are love.

In DOG IS LOVE: Why and How Your Dog Loves You, pioneering canine behaviorist Clive Wynne reveals that dogs’ capacity for love, not their intelligence or submissiveness, lies at the heart of human-canine relationships.

Drawing on cutting-edge studies from labs around the world, Wynne shows that affection is the very essence of dogs, from the genes that code for loving behavior, through brain states that register and direct dogs’ affection for people, to the hormones that exactly match those in humans that show love.

Among the topics that DOG IS LOVE illuminates:
* How dogs are capable of building bridges of affection between species
* What conditions are needed in a dog’s early life to ensure that bonds of affection are forged
* How dogs developed the ability to love in a short - by evolutionary standards - period of time
* How we can use this knowledge to help dogs lead richer, more satisfying lives

Clive Wynne, Ph.D. is the founding director of the Canine Science Collaboratory at Arizona State University. He is widely published and has appeared on National Geographic Explorer, PBS, and the BBC.

The Souls of Animals

In this revised second edition of this celebrated book, Unitarian Universalist minister Gary Kowalski grapples with the big spiritual questions around our relationship with animals: Do animals have souls? Are they aware of death and are they conscious of themselves? Do animals have an inherent capacity to recognize beauty and can they create art? Do animals experience love? Do they know right from wrong? Why do birds sing? And ultimately what do we lose in a world without animals and what does that mean for our ongoing relationship with the creatures with which we share the world?

Kowalski offers beautifully written vignettes that shed light on these questions and much more. He explores how animals play, their sense of altruism, their capacity for love. By “desacrilizing” animals, Kowalski argues, we make ourselves less human. “If we are to keep our family homestead — Earth — safe for coming generations,” he writes, “we must awaken to a new respect for the family of life.” Praise for The Souls of Animals includes:

“Gary Kowalski helps us unlock the mysteries of animal spirituality. For as we have learned from the companion animals that share our lives and our homes, when we look into their eyes we see the reflection of our won humanity.”

—Kim Stallwood, Executive Director, PETA

“Gary Kowalski’s voice is one that empowers us to say in public what we have thought in private — that animals love their companions, know grief and hoy and play and create. The are truly our bothers and sisters in fur, feather and fin.”

—Tom Regan, author of The Case for Animal Rights

“This is an important book because it is so revealing of the animal soul that touches ours when we are open and receptive. In the process, our own souls are enriched.”

Dr. Michael W. Fox, former vice president, the Humane Society of the United States

Gary Kowalski is a Unitarian Universalist minister in Burlington, VT. He holds degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Divinity School. A native of Oklahoma, he has served churches in Memphis, Tennessee, and Seattle, Washington, before moving to Burlington. He is the author of several books, including Goodbye Friend: Healing Wisdom For Anyone Who Has Ever Lost A Pet, also published by New World Library.
