Does your Veterinarian have Specific Senior Pet Programs for the pet and their pet parents?

In the recent DVM360 veterinary magazine survey, it was reported that most of veterinary hospitals do not have a special emphasis on Senior Pet Wellness. If your veterinarian or your practice does have a Senior Pet Wellness program – Congratulations!

For those who don’t there are great resources available from the AVMA, AAHA and even the DVM360 magazine web version. All these will have procedures, brochures and suggestions for a successful Senior Pet Program.

Here are some suggestions gleaned from these resources:

Make sure the entire staff is on the same page. You can use a chart that lists recommended procedures for every age. The chart can function as a reference for receptionists when they are checking in the patient.

Talk to your lab about custom panels or develop your own Senior Pet Panel.

Teach Team Members. Make certain that all on your team know the basics about common problems in senior pets.

Implement a Senior Pet Discount. A senior pet really needs to be seen more often so a discount could encourage more frequent visits.

Interested in Adding a Senior Wellness Program to your Practice?

Neutricks encourages you to do an on line research at DVM360, the AVMA or AAHA and check out all the great resources.

Summer Safety Tips for Senior Pets

Summer is just around the corner! The temperatures are slowly rising, so it's important that you help your pet keep cool.  Remember the following to keep your pet comfortable:

Your pets sweat only through their paws. Keep them cool on car rides by cracking the window or turning on the air conditioner.

If the pavement is hot on your bare feet, it’s hot on their paws! Be careful where your pet steps.

Ensure that your pet has accessible fresh water at all times.

Pets with light-colored hair or thin hair on some parts of their body are susceptible to sunburn; break out the sunscreen if you plan to be outside for a long period of time.

Heatstroke is a definite medical emergency. If your pet shows signs such as high fever, staring, panting, rapid heartbeat, or vomiting, get them to the vet immediately.

Spring Safety Tips for Senior Pets

Spring is an awesome time of the year, but just like any other time of the year, it has its share of safety tips to be aware of when enjoying it with your fur babies.

Here are a couple of tips to remember with your senior pet, and for more tip you can download our free spring guide for senior pets.

Auto Safety: While a dog with its head out the window is the picture of happiness, it’s really not a great idea. Your pet could be struck by flying debris or insects, with could lead to inner ear or eye injuries or even lung infections. You should secure your pet in a crate or with a seatbelt harness to prevent injury when you stop or turn abruptly.

Garden Perils: You and your pet love to play in the garden, but is your garden safe for your pet? There are many different plants that can be toxic to your dog or cat. Even very common plants such as daffodils or tulips can make your pet very ill, so do your homework prior to planting this spring.

Another source of danger is the pesticides or fertilizers you use in your yard. While these products can help your garden to thrive, they can be very damaging to your pet. If you’re unsure of whether or not your garden is safe, it’s smart to fence it off to keep your pet from potentially ingesting something that could lead to problems or worse.

Easter Safety: A Tip for Pets

Easter can be a lot of fun for you and your family, but it can be incredibly dangerous for your pets. However, if you take the time to learn about the potential hazards that could be in your home during this holiday season, you can enjoy your celebration without worrying about your best friend— your senior pet.

Easter Lilies: Is there anything more beautiful than an Easter lily? These plants are very pretty, but they’re also very toxic to your pets, particularly our feline friends. Avoid bringing these seasonal plants into your home to keep your pets safe. Cyclamen and Amaryllis are also dangerous to pets, so be careful with any flowers or plants you bring in the house. If you must have a lily, choose an artificial one.

Our Research is now Easier to Find

Our research has always been available in the vet portal on our website.  However we've gotten feedback lately that it was still hard to find.  So at the end of 2016, we added a link to "Research" right at the top of our site in the main navigation.  This is a shortcut to the vet portal and gives you a quicker way to access the research section.  We hope this change will make our research more convenient to vets and other animal professionals.
