Cats will prance down the runway in this paws-itively fabulous fashion event celebrating Hamlet The Algonquin Cat, while raising money to help their furry friends.

 

 
   

 

NEW YORK (July 1, 2019) – Tickets are now available for The Algonquin Hotel’s annual Cat Fashion Show, which will take place on Thursday, Aug. 1 to raise money for the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals. The event will bring together the city’s most fashionable felines to strut their stuff in one-of-a-kind outfits that coincide with this year’s theme of “It’s a Small World.” It also celebrates Hamlet VIII, The Algonquin Cat, the hotel’s famous feline resident.

The spectacle will take place from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and desserts; a silent auction featuring a variety of kitty-centric items; an on-site mobile adoption unit in front of the hotel that day from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and of course NYC cats hitting the catwalk in opulent threads designed by legendary pet fashion designer Ada Nieves. Human guests are encouraged to wear their most eccentric, feline-inspired outfit and share photos from the un-fur-gettable night on social media using the hashtag #AlgonquinCat.

Tickets are on sale now for $75 per person, with 100 percent of proceeds benefiting the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, a nonprofit charity that works with more than 150 partner rescue groups and shelters to offer important programs and services that save the lives of NYC's homeless animals. A raffle will raise additional funds throughout the evening, with prizes including a variety of pet products curated by the event’s co-chair, pet lifestyle expert and author Sandy Robins.

ABOUT THE ALGONQUIN CAT

For many years the history of The Algonquin Cat was believed to have its origins in the 1930’s, when a stray cat came wandering into the hotel for food and water. After the hotel acquired an out-of-print book written by the hotel’s first general manager, Frank Case, a chapter was discovered about a cat named Billy. Based on the timeline of the book, the hotel is now proud to say the lineage of The Algonquin Cat dates back to the early 1920's. Two days after Billy passed, a stray cat wandered into the hotel and The Algonquin welcomed Rusty. The famous classical actor, John Barrymore, was a resident at the time in the early 1930's, and Rusty was renamed Hamlet in his honor. Hamlet is said to have been Barrymore's greatest stage role. The hotel has had a total of 12 cats, including Billy. The lineage includes eight Hamlets and three Matildas. Each cat that has reigned at The Algonquin has been a rescue. In 1980, author Hilary Knight immortalized The Algonquin Cat with his cartoons for a children’s book on which he collaborated with Val Schaffer. The current Hamlet began his residence in July 2017.

Today, Hamlet is looked after by the hotel’s chief cat officer, Alice De Almeida. The hotel’s executive chef cooks him special meals on holidays. NEW YORK, NY (July 12, 2017) — It's not quite New York Fashion Week, but eight felines will be strutting their stuff in one-of-a-kind outfits designed by certified animal fashion designer Ada Nieves in celebration of The Algonquin Hotel's most famous resident, Matilda III, The Algonquin Cat.

The Annual Celebration & Cat Fashion Show will take place on Thursday, August 3rd from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. This year's theme is a tribute to TONY award-winning musicals and highlights will include:

  • Cocktails, Hors D'Oeuvres, and Desserts
  • Cat Fashion Show
  • Silent Auction featuring a variety of items including Pet Tree Houses, Sleepy Pod, one-year supply of Merrick Cat Good, a pair of tickets to CATS the Musical featuring a backstage "meet and greet"
  • On-site mobile adoption unit will also be in front of the hotel that day from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Hotel’s legendary feline is celebrated and aims to raise $10,000 for the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals

 

NEW YORK, NY – (July 1, 2016) - Every year The Algonquin Hotel honors its most famous resident, Matilda III, The Algonquin Cat, with a celebration. The party will be held on Wednesday, August 10,from 5:00PM – 7:30PM in the hotel’s iconic lobby. 2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the cat fashion show and will feature a show by Ada Nieves, a certified animal fashion designer by the Fashion Institute of Technology. The theme of the fashion show, Through the Decades, will honor the iconic looks of the hotel’s most famous guests and patrons, including Al Hirschfeld, Michael Feinstein, Marilyn Monroe, John Barrymore and many more!

In honor of the 10 year anniversary the hotel is hoping to raise $10,000 dollars for the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals. Starting July 1, tickets will go on sale online for $50 per person.   In addition the hotel will hold an online auction with exciting prizes. Auction items include: two tickets and a back stage meet and greet with the cast of the brand new revival of CATS, private consultation and cat tree house by Pet Tree Houses, custom autographed poster by the author and illustrator of the upcoming new children’s book,Matilda: The Algonquin Cat, private walking tour hosted by author and historian, Kevin Fitzpatrick. There will be an on-site mobile adoption unit parked in front of the hotel from 3:00PM – 7:00PM. The $50 donation allows all guests access to the fashion show and includes a reception with special hors d’oeuvres. Additional funds will be raised throughout the evening with raffle prizes, including a variety of pet products curated by the event’s co-chair, Pet Lifestyle Expert and author, Sandy Robins.

250,000 Animal Lives Saved; No-Kill New York City Within Reach



NEW YORK, NY: December 16, 2013 – In just one decade, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals has brought New York City within reach of becoming a no-kill community.



Since its founding in 2003, this public-private coalition of more than 150 animal shelters, rescue groups, veterinarians, and others has saved the lives of more than a quarter of a million homeless animals and found homes for the vast majority. Because of the Alliance, New York City now has the lowest euthanasia rate per capita of any major U.S. metropolis (1 out of 1,000).



Said Jane Hoffman, co-founder, president and board chair of the Mayor’s Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization not affiliated with the City of New York: “The Alliance has succeeded because of the combined efforts and tireless dedication of its community partners. As we begin our second decade, the goal of a no-kill New York City is within sight and the strength of this collaboration has never been greater.”



The Alliance’s outsized impact on the welfare of New York City’s animals can be seen in achievements like these:



1.     Euthanasia of cats and dogs at the City’s animal shelters has declined 80 percent, to just over 6,000 (projected) from just under 32,000 a decade ago ─ an all-time low for Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C). This means that the Alliance and its member groups are succeeding in finding homes for eight out of every 10 dogs and cats entering AC&C.



2.     The Alliance’s shelters and rescue groups have found adoptive homes for more than a quarter of a million dogs and cats. In 2012 alone, 28,000 pets were adopted – many through Alliance events like Adoptapalooza!, Whiskers in Wonderland, and Maddie's®Pet Adoption Days.



3.     The Alliance's Wheels of Hope fleet of animal-transport vans has ferried almost 70,000 dogs and cats from AC&C shelters to foster and adoptive families, to Alliance partner shelters dedicated to finding them homes, and to veterinary appointments – all at no cost to the groups and individuals served. With transportation a particular challenge for many Alliance groups, Wheels of Hope, launched in 2005, fills a critical gap seven days a week, 365 days a year.



4.     The Alliance’s NYC Feral Cat Initiative, also launched in 2005, has made huge strides in solving New York City’s feral cat overpopulation crisis. By offering free training workshops to groups and individuals who perform Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR); through giveaways of cat food, straw, and additional critical supplies; and by means of other supportive efforts, the Alliance is helping to humanely reduce the number of community (feral) cats.



5.     The Alliance’s medical fund, a key initiative from the start, has paid for urgent veterinary care for thousands of sick and injured cats and dogs awaiting adoption.
