Four dogs have died in the company’s care in just five months
NEW JERSEY -- A corgi who died in a New Jersey PetSmart’s grooming care last week has become the
fourth pet to die in the company’s care nationwide this year. A Care2 petition demanding PetSmart shut
down its grooming care until an investigation into root causes is completed and changes have been made
has gathered over 42,000 signatures.

An 8-year-old corgi named Abby became the latest PetSmart grooming casualty. Owner Chuck Crawford
said he dropped off his two dogs at a PetSmart grooming center in Tom’s River, New Jersey, only to
receive a 20-second “crude” phone call telling him to pick up Abby’s body.
In late December in Flemington, Danielle DiNapoli’s bulldog Scruffles died while in the company’s
grooming care, too. PetSmart said an internal investigation found the groomers involved followed "all
policies and procedures,” but the dog’s family was unable to speak to the groomer involved, and
PetSmart refused to write a written report summarizing the investigation.
A Care2 petition demanding PetSmart investigate and release a public report concerning the death
gathered over 91,000 signatures.
PetSmart told TODAY that the animal deaths were separate and unrelated, and it has formed a task force
to evaluate its grooming procedures.
“After Scruffles the bulldog died, the outrage caused PetSmart to launch a comprehensive review to
change the way they do grooming,” said Care2 petition author Kelsey Bourgeois. “But obviously pets are
still getting hurt and dying in the meantime. This is why we need to insist PetSmart halts it grooming
programs in all stores until root causes are identified and changes have been implemented.”
A third Care2 petition is calling for a national “Scruffles’ Law” to be implemented, which would allow pet
owners to due for damages. All together, the three Care2 petitions have gathered over 150,000
signatures.
