BURBANK, Calif. (June 16, 2016) – As Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Dory” swims into theaters this week, low-vision and blind fans are invited to enjoy the film alongside family members in theaters, thanks to a breakthrough in independent moviegoing. Smart-syncing audio description, a new feature introduced to in-home audiences four months ago on the Disney Movies Anywhere (DMA) app, heads to theaters nationwide for the first time with the release of “Finding Dory.” Accessed via one’s own iPhone® or iPad® and a set of ear buds, the feature provides users with free audio description that elegantly narrates important on-screen action for those who can’t always follow along visually.

More than 21 million people in the United States are blind or visually impaired. While all feature films include a track for the blindness community, until now, these tracks have been accessible only by utilizing special gear provided by a limited number of individual theaters. The DMA app, downloaded via iTunes onto an iPhone® or iPad® running iOS 7 or above, accesses the mobile device’s microphone to “listen” to the big-screen presentation and syncs the audio descriptions accordingly so users can hear both the descriptive narrative and the film’s original audio. Pixar has invited members of the visually impaired community to focus group screenings for more than eight years in an effort to craft the narration in the most effective and enjoyable manner possible.

Earlier this week, FCC chairman Tom Wheeler included Disney Movies Anywhere among five winners of its Advancement in Accessibility Award, which recognizes achievements in communications technology for those with disabilities.

“Finding Dory” is the 17th Disney•Pixar film to feature the complimentary audio accessibility via the DMA app, which is currently only available in the U.S. Audio synchronization technology is provided by Audible Magic.

Braving the black waters of the Brazilian Amazon, he’ll carefully navigate past anacondas and piranhas to study the shock of the stealthy giant electric eel. Rivers aren’t exactly where you’d expect to find giant 1,000-pound monsters but that is exactly where Dr. Zeb Hogan plans to research giant freshwater rays. His journey starts in the Northern Territory of Australia, where Zeb searches for whiprays, a rare species that was properly identified only in the past few years. After catching mostly bull sharks, Zeb turns his attention to Thailand’s giant freshwater stingray. On the Mae Klong River, he battles a 385-pound behemoth for hours. While not a world record, it’s definitely the biggest fish that Zeb has ever caught with a rod and reel!

The wolf fish can reach three-feet in length, weigh as much as 88 pounds and are a species said to be a brutal hunter—of animals and reportedly even humans. Little is known about this aggressive giant so Zeb heads into the heart of Guyana to hunt for the biggest wolf fish he can find and to see if they deserve their fearsome reputation. To reel in the elusive predator, he’ll have to navigate the harsh terrain and carefully avoid heart-pounding encounters with anacondas, piranhas and vampire fish. Teaming up with one of the region’s smallest and remote tribes, Zeb uses local techniques like fishing in the dark of night and using poisonous bait in his ultimate quest to hook a monster wolf fish.

Monster Fish: Amazon Shocker

Does size really matter? Zeb travels to the Brazilian Amazon to determine whether the shock of an electric eel is proportionate to the fish’s size. They’re capable of delivering a shock five times more powerful than a standard U.S. socket, making this mission particularly dangerous. Armed with local guides, high-tech electricity detectors and, of course, rubber protective pants and gloves … Zeb carefully navigates the Amazon’s black waterways where electric eels and the dreaded piranha and anaconda all reside. After some near misses and one cameraman’s “shocking” brush with one of these electric fish, Zeb is finally able to put his theory to the test.

Aquatic ecologist and National Geographic Fellow Dr. Zeb Hogan travels across the globe in the television series Monster Fish to find big freshwater fish — some of them endangered—and the livelihood of people who share their habitats. Hogan earned an undergraduate degree in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Arizona. He later became a visiting Fulbright student at the Environmental Risk Assessment Program at Thailand's Chiang Mai University. Returning to the United States, Hogan completed a National Science Foundation–sponsored Ph.D. in ecology at the University of California, Davis. Robert Wintner, AKA Snorkel Bob, works tirelessly and with great charm to educate the public about the need to protect our marine life from the devastating effects of the restaurant and aquarium industries on marine life and habitat. Snorkel Bob owns dive shops that sell Snorkel Bob scuba gear, and is the founder of the Snorkel Bob Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reef defense. He lives in Kihei, Hawaii.

Wintner’s 2007 novel, In a Sweet Magnolia Time (Permanent Press, Sag Harbor, NY) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Toucan Whisper, Toucan Sing (Permanent Press, ’02) was widely reviewed as a triumph of lyrical fiction in a Mexican tourism setting. His adventure novel of the sailing charter trade Whirlaway (Smallwood, ’95) was a Maui County Library Hot Pick for 15 years and still resonates with the charter community.

Whirlaway and The Modern Outlaws were both optioned for film rights by Hollywood production companies. Many other novels and accolades have come forth over the years, though the building blocks for Every Fish Tells a Story and Some Fishes I Have Known (Skyhorse, NY) were set into place long ago.

Robert Wintner recalls the day in 1955 when his father took him to Walgreen’s in Miami for a $2 mask & snorkel—the deluxe with the ping-pong ball—then down to the beach and into the shallows. The old man’s wingtips got soaked as Bobby put his face in the water. A 3” sand crab waved a claw, and Bobby took it for a greeting, looking up and sputtering, “Oh, God! You can see everything!”

Today, Robert Wintner is Executive Director of the Snorkel Bob Foundation and an active member of Hawaii’s conservation community, working diligently to protect Hawaii’s reefs. The Snorkel Bob Foundation was instrumental in protecting the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) as Papahanaumokuakea Marine Monument. 

Wintner has worked the point position against the aquarium trade in Hawaii and around the world for the last few years. He is known in Hawaii business for media substance that entertains and sells and uses his professional skills to conserve Hawaii reefs.

The Snorkel Bob Foundation was instrumental in underwriting and producing a “reef etiquette” video PSA that airs in hotels and other tourist venues. Wintner also produced a PSA that aired statewide, advocating the end to gillnet fishing. This gillnet PSA was effective in completely banning gillnets on Maui.

BURBANK, Calif. (June 1, 2012) — Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Nemo” dives back into theaters and homes this year in breathtaking Digital 3D™. The must-“sea,” must-own Oscar®-winning underwater adventure—featuring the unforgettable Marlin, his forgetful friend Dory and the lovable young Nemoreturns to the big screen in a spectacular 3D theatrical release beginning September 14, 2012, and then swims into living rooms for the first time ever in high-definition Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D and Digital platforms on December 4, 2012.

“‘Finding Nemo’ was originally shot in 3D,” said John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios and the film’s executive producer. “At last, with today’s technological advances, this spectacular underwater world can be seen as it was intended—showcasing its eye-popping detail and breathtaking colors to both theatrical and in-home audiences and creating a truly immersive experience.”

“Finding Nemo,” first released in theaters in 2003, earned the Oscar® for Best Animated Feature Film and remains the fifth highest grossing animated film worldwide. In 2008, the American Film Institute named “Finding Nemo” among the top 10 greatest animated films ever made, and it is the second highest grossing Pixar film to date (behind “Toy Story 3”).

The Blu-ray 2D and 3D debuts mark the first time “Finding Nemo” has ever been available in these hi-def formats. Featuring pristine high definition picture and sound, the Blu-ray creates an incredible at-home experience with a host of interactive features and bonus features including 3D Virtual Aquariums, 2D Virtual Aquariums, CineExplorer, a Filmmaker Roundtable and more.

The home entertainment release of “Finding Nemo” will be available this holiday season as follows:

ABOUT “FINDING NEMO”

In this stunning underwater adventure teeming with memorable comedic characters and heartfelt emotion, “Finding Nemo” follows the momentous journey of an overprotective clownfish named Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks) and his young son Nemo (voiced by Alexander Gould). When the two are unexpectedly separated in the Great Barrier Reef, Nemo is carried far from his ocean home and deposited in a fish tank in a dentist’s office. Buoyed by the companionship of Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres), a friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish, Marlin embarks on a dangerous trek and finds himself the unlikely hero of an epic effort to rescue his son––who hatches a few daring plans of his own to return safely home.
